One disturbing and frightening noise is having your alarm set off accidentally at night thinking someone has broken in. My family has ADT.

One time on Oprah (I hate Oprah, but not her show)..., they had something about Orphanages in Japan, or China, on of them, and there was this little girl, who they had left in a room alone to DIE. They gave her no food or water, nothing, just put her in a crib and left the room, and never came back. And she was crying for somebody when the people found her, but her cry was so weak, that nobody could hear her outside of the room. That is the most disturbing noise I have ever heard.

That little girl died I think a week later.

The Chinese Water Torture used the dripping of drops of water into a bucket - and without doubt that is the most disturbing sound one can hear - because the frequency and pitch of the sound of a drop falling into water is the most disturbing sound the human mind can bear. And this is not an emotional answer - check it out yourself and you will see that it is right

A scream. Not a stupid or silly scream. But one of those screams... I watched a documentary about Sept. 11th, and just the screams people let out as they jumped out of buildings makes me cry. Also when I was in the doctor's office I heard a baby scream because it was getting a shot, which suprised me of course... it was no ordinally baby scream...
*ahem* Well there you go.

The sound of Someone you love crying in pain.
My mother passed away in 2001. But I can still hear her moaning and crying in pain. I'll never forget that sound.
And not being able to do anything about it.

I can't pin it down to one thing, but my vote goes to: chalk screeching on a board, a baby crying (not the normal crying) out
of pain, the death chortle that comes out of a dying person,
George Bush anytime he gives a speech? Want more?

The sound of one hand clapping :)

The sound of a tree falling in a forest and there is no one to hear it :)

The sound of the nails going into the wrists of Jesus Christ as he was crucified. (I used to be an atheist. Over a period of time however, I grew convinced of the existence of the Christian God, and ultimately committed my life to Christ... e.g., see http://www.godsci.org/gs/chri/testimony/seek.html ).

Cordially,
John

The continued cry of a baby has been known to make women cry out even if they don't have kids of their own.

Silence. I have a perpetually racing mind and I desperately need some distractions.
