Very interesting answers. Although I am going to go with "fear of the unknown" as the best answer so far.

Animals are not afraid of dying. People are. I'm sure it's more instictual than factual. We...over millions of years...had to survive. As a species we have not only survived but evolved as well. The earth doesn't lie and we came from a long line of descedents. Fossils have been found to dictate our past. As far as there being an Adam and Eve? i don't know about this. dinosaurs were never mentioned in the bible. but there is unrefutable evidence of fossils in Patagonia. Who knows what else is "out there"? there are so many galaxies and planets that we cant even see. could be 500 more earths. so maybe we go to another planet when we die

Maybe we ARE in a Matrix :>). And the machines are controlling us.

If death is like sleep then i'm OK with that so I won't have to take any sleep aids anymore. they make me groggy in the matrix.

OH i think my question was misunderstood. By "mystery" i mean that no one has come back to tell us about it.

and second of all, I love living. TOTALLY LOVE MY LIFE and really don't want to die. Not really afraid of dying since I realize this is such an amazing universe and the being that created it must be even more awesome. So enjoy life! i do.

I think you're crazy.

Death is not a mistery... if you believe in G-d even a little bit, you'd probably expect to go to heaven or to hell once you die. But the truth is... nothing like that will ever happen. I mean, before you lived you can't remember nothing from then can u? And when you die you'll simple be gone... all of those thoughts of heaven and reinkornation (don't know how to spell) are just things you think about. Which means... once you die you'll die. The sole may go somewhere but as a human or some other being you would never know where. Why?? Because all of the memories and stuff is locked in your brain and in your body right now. There's a reason why people say that life is given only once. And that reason is because it really is given only once. So live it well and don't try to kill yourself early because you'll most probably be disapointed by the result. No one proved yet if all of this life and death mysteries are for real.... and if you find out what is the answer, there will be no going back. So think well before you do such a dumb thing.

I personally think you should find something to live for. Like for example, I live for my family, to see how technology evolves and possible take part in advancing it, and for myself. Now you decide what you live. Nothing is hopeless... unless you live for drugs, liquor, and cigarets. Goodluck with your journey of life.

It is a mystery because we do not pay attention to what the Bible says. Death is nothing more than sleep. Ecclesiastes 9:5, says that the living know that they're going to die but the dead know nothing. But there is more, when Jesus returns the dead in christ will be raised up and go to heaven with Him. To the dead this will seem like the blinking of an eye, almost instantly happening-live-death-resurrection, even though the person may be dead for hundreds of years.

Knowing what went on in the afterlife would possibly stop people from living life now. The mystery of death forces people to live the life that they have. Live for today, because you are not guaranteed a tomorrow. Live as God had wanted you to live. Life has consequences. There is no free ride. How you live today determines how you will live in eternity.

Because it involves the unknown. No one who has died and stayed in the state of being dead has come back to tell me about it. People who have had near death experiences have shared some ideas but other than faith in God, we have no empirical information about the spiritual realm or the metaphysical. That is why death is a mystery to mankind.

WHO SAYS IT IS A MYSTERY?
Ec 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Ec 3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
JESUS DESRIBE DEATH AS A DEEP SLEEP
Joh 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
Joh 11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
Joh 11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Joh 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
SEEK THE TRUTH OF GOD NOW SO YOU CAN PARTAKE OF THE FIST RESURRECTION.
Re 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Re 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Re 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Death is no mystery at all, thats why we have the Bible it tells us what will happen exactly, we will have death as wages for our sin, which we will go to sleep, and those who know the Lord, Jesus Christ will be awakened when Jesus returns. We will go on to a heavenly eternal life with God, since we will no longer have sin.

There is no mystery.

The brain stops functioning, we lose conscious awareness, and the body begins evolving into other life forms (decomposing).

No mystery at all.

It isn't to me I am going to heaven where I will have eternal fellowship with God in paradise. Hell, where non-believers are going, is a place of complete darkness, utter aloneness, and scorching heat. It is a place of eternal punishment.
