I have a blank wall, about 10' wide x 8' tall. I am going to put about 10-12 framed pictures on it, all 4x6" photos, and all the frames are the same. They are all landscape (horizontal). What is the best way to arrange the pictures on the wall - should they be scattered, or two rows perfectly in line with each other?? Looking for some thoughts from decorating minded people, which I am not! THanks!!

I like scattered.

Here's a way to come up with a layout that you would like without putting unnecessary holes in the wall. Using grocery sacks, cut out squares and rectangles in the same size and shape as your frames by tracing the frames onto the paper. Then tape those paper shapes onto the wall and rearrange them until you find a layout you like. Now that you've got a layout you like, you can hang your pictures.

If the rest of your decor is formal,
I think you should continue the formal look
and balance them. The crown moulding shelf idea
was good. Or maybe try to groups of 5 or 6,
arranged maybe how the 5 is arrnaged on a playing card.

If your decor is less formal, then scattered about
will look fine, either arranged around a centerpiece
or a larger center picture, and using the template as
suggested before sounds like a great idea.

Get two really nice pieces of moulding or chair rail. Each about 5 -5 1/2 feet long. Attach the molding to wall in two rows and set the framed pictures on the moulding(using the moulding a a kind of shelf to hold the pictures). Saw it in a decor mag. and it looked really good. It made the pictures a nice feature in the room.

Take a look at the pictures as a whole and find something that ties them together... same frames, backgrounds, all friends, all family, etc. Then you can find a medium or large center piece that will tie them together and place the pictures around it.

Hope this helps, good luck.

If bowling is a hobby of yours, you could set them up like a rack of pins:

23
456
78910

Or a diamond shape, anything creative to bring attention to the pictures themselves and away from the wall. Especially if it is colored white or off-white.
