Despite this being a brand new disc bought legally, it still tells me that I have no sound device installed. What do I do? (apart from suicide!)

I know it sound daft but check all your Input/ output setting on the sound card...you have prob done this but recheck that nothing it on Mute or turned down... I had the same problem .
If No sound card found reinstal from " Instal new hardware" and look for a sound card device and reinstal .
Sorry to be a bit vague, Hope this helps.
PS Most sound cards will work with a AC97 driver so download that from www.download.com

The disc that came with your motherboard would have drivers for the sound, not the XP disc. Apart from that search for the chipset that is on your board like AC97 for example. If that fails, go to the motherboard manufacturer site and look for drivers there for download.

XP installs default sound cards for Every Mother board.
I advice u yo install Sound card from ur Mother board cd. Usually Sound card num is printed on the Motherboard Cover. So have a look on it right now.
Eg:- My sound card num is VIA823X.
NOTE:- Mother board cd contains more than 1 sound card, u must install the 1 that suits ur Motherboard(by looking at the soundcard num).
Any probs, do mail me at binesh_3192@rediffmail.com

Go to Control Panel, select System, then Hardware, and then Device Manager and look for any yellow symbols (think its either ? or !) These are conflicts that need resolving to get your sound system working

Also make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card - these you can find via the web

hope this helps

Connect to the internet. Go to the start menu and open windows update. Install the critical updates first and then go to custom.
Windows may have a sound driver for your pc.
If not, go to driverzone.com and lok up your driver.
