Sure...but some might call it brainwashing if it is done to the extreme.
Positive thinking can remedy and cure lots of problems.

These are the rule's that apply to your question. You will head in the direction that you are looking and you will get good at what you practice. The best course to follow is look for good things to happen and practice being good. If you wish to change your life you must change where you are looking and change what you are practicing. If you don't have a direction that you wish to change to, you are more likely to fall back into old habits. Your thoughts get bigger and gain momentum as you go and the longer you follow them the harder it is to change. Like changing the direction of an ocean liner takes time and distance to do so. But changing the direction of a jet-ski is quick and short. No matter which way the wind blows you adjust your own sails. You and you alone are responsible for all the decisions you make. If you make bad decisions, then bad things will happen. IF you make good decision, bad things will still happen...but not as many as when you make bad decisions. Be like a duck and let the water roll of your back. You must become impeccable in your stance, never take anything anyone else says personally and never assume anything about anyone. Finally you must try your best and never give up. You can change your life and the universe by changing the way you live. We are all little two-way radios that send and recieve information on a lot of different channels all at the same time. You decide what channel you want to broadcast on. I try to filter all my broadcast through the peace and love frequency before I send them out. You can continue to rebroadcast what others have told you or you can believe in yourself and set sail on a whole new voyage of life and love. Peace and Love...Joetheway.

Leaders, true leaders in fact, can make people come around their view-point. This they do by leading by example, esp. in adversity, because as they say:adversity brings out the best (or worst) in a person, and they know that while most of the people are scared of facing that kind of scenario, they (the leaders) see it as an opportunity.
Also, they -- the leaders -- don't demand respect... they command it, by their words, esp. by their actions, 'coz they know if they don't follow up on those lofty words coming out of their mouth by concrete actions, nobody is gonna believe them, and once their credibility goes down (the toilet), its next to impossible to restore it.
So yes, if you think you can, sure your thinking can change the world... but don't expect it to be a cakewalk, rather an uphill struggle and also you have to have courage of their convictions, able to withstand pressure and not be ready to give in for short-term gains, rather look at the horizon and anticipate changes.
Also, it has to start with you, because charity begins at home and as Mahatma Gandhi said:you have to be the change that you want to see around you, and also to quote Roosevelt:you have nothing to fear, but the fear itself.
