Taoism is a religion in China. It is very ancient. It is the belief in the Tao.

The BBC Ethics & Religion website does a great job of explaining Taoism, as well as other religions. I highly recommend that site.

Here is the link and some other sites that are also good for learning about other religions that I have found that do a really great job at presenting the religions honestly and without bias.

The Tao is the path that one must follow in life. It is a code of behavior. The Tao is the natural order of all things and is based on the principles of Yin and Yang.
The Tao or path is a process of coming into being, maturing, and then decaying and returning to the Tao. ? Everything in the world is a part of this constant cycle.
Yin and Yang are believed to govern the behavior of all things. Yin is a feminine energy. Yang is a masculine energy. These are believed to be identical aspects of the same idea.
Taoist's believe in living a natural and simple life. Taoism is a polytheistic religion. Believers choose one of many gods that is useful at different times in their life. More information about this and many other world religions can be found at :

Real Taoism is not a religion. Its a philosophy put together by Lao Tzu before he left China. He wrote the "Dao De Jing" which is a collection of poems that focus on understanding life. There is another book "Wen Tzu" which is a collection of things Lao Tzu said to one of his students. Then there is the "Hua Hu Jing" which was written in Kashmir by a royal clerk who was writing down what Lao Tzu was saying to a prince, remember he left China.

Lao Tzu basicly teaches to not take life too seriously, just enjoy it and try to understand it and become one with the Tao, after that its pretty much up to interpretation of what he meant.

http://www.thetao.info/ would be a good place to start, but for a here and now answer:

Apart from any fromalized version of Taoism, tao means "the way" its a loose reference to your path through life. Not so much focussing on the actual route, more the way you tread the path.

I wish I knew more about it, but I haven't studied it as much as I would have liked to.

You can read about it on Wikipedia.
