ECT works for some people. That's electroconvulsive therapy. Basically, shock treatment. They've made a lot of advances with it in recent years, and for some people, a series of ECT treatments works better than anything else, especially when medications have failed.

Change your life. Do something different. The biggest cause of depression is a subconscious desire to change a situation combined with the fear that you might not succeed (helplessness). Even if the change in your life seems pointless, on a subconscious level it stimulates your depression to decrease.
I am of the opinion that in many cases, depression is natures way of telling you what you are doing is biologically or evolutionarily detrimental. For example, if you eat Mcdonald's hamburgers everyday, you'll naturally start feeling depressed because your body is telling you the food is harming your body. The depression will cause you to hurt inside, and associate pain with your activities so you subconsciously learn to behave differently. Here's another example - if you stop socializing you'll become depressed because your evolutionary instinct is to be around people because it increases your likelihood of finding a mate to procreate with. Therefore, if an antisocial lifestyle didn't cause depression, antisocial people would be less likely to feel compelled to alter their behavior in way that increases their chance to pass their seed. Depression has been passed on from generation to generation as a tool for the survival of our species.
Depression is all about slowing down, reflecting, and changing toward a more fruitful path.
You won't hear this theory often, but trust me, there's tremendous truth in it.
My advice to you, if medicine hasn't helped you, is to either change your life significantly, change your mindset significantly, or better yet, both. That will naturally stimulate a healing process and your brain will signal for the depression to subside.

first, try to find medications that work for you. this could take some time. i know one man that suffered from severe depression and no meds helped. so he decided to have electric shock treatments. i don't remember how many he had but it did help his depression. he said that he was sedated during the process and had a slight headache after each one. he was given some pain reliever for the headaches. he's now on meds and says he is doing fine.

Try Omega Oil capsules and exercise. Sometimes therapy helps to get the anger out. Most depression is actually pent up anger.

Excercise is always good because during physical activities your body makes its own endorphines, also known as the "happy hormones". Getting enough daylight is also important, lack of it causes depression. Try to find something to look forward to each day. Avoid alcohol.

I like what the first person said, but that's not a cure. Depression is anger turned inward, so once you resolve your anger, the depression goes away.
