I've seen some nice looks done with sander prime and a good paintjob.

I wouldn't recomend the textured wallpaper route. The seams always seem too chunky.

I HATE paneling!!! We bought a house with paneling in the den and I thought I would have to tear it out. My mother insisted that I try painting it first to see if I could live with that. I love it. I don't even notice that it is paneling and neither does anyone else. When I say something about paneling in my house everyone says --where?? Your house isn't paneled. It is painted a beige color. Try that first. It could save you a lot of money and if you still don't like it you are only out 40 bucks or so and some time.

You can buy a wall paper like product that makes the surface smooth, then wallpaper over the paneling. I am not sure what the product is called, but it is similar to felt, but comes in a roll. It fills in the lines/grooves of the paneling, making it easy to paper over. Surely available at most large retail home improvement centers.
Have fun.

Your best bet is to prime and paint over the paneling, which by the way will be a lot cheaper than removing it. If you need any more tips on painting, check out this guide:http://www.decorativeinteriorpainting.com

Painting is the obvious answer, but painting only will give you a flat surface. So in addition to painting you may consider texturing the surface first or use one of the newer paints that cover as well as texture at the same time.

My parents had the same problem and they sanded the paneling a bit, primed it and then painted a nice light cream color. It looks great now.

We had the same thing in our office at work. We primed, then painted it a light kahki color. It made the entire room look so much larger, and it still had the grooves in it for some texture.
