If this happens as your tired old monitor warms up, then maybe you need a NEW ONE. Try fiddling with the monitor adjustments.

When you have determined that you need a new monitor, I recommend a new LCD Flat Panel. I bought a 19" at NewEgg for $210 last month... it's awsome. But they have smaller and cheaper ones. Read the REVIEWS.

http://www.NewEgg.com
use the search field for LCD MONITOR
Click on SEE ALL MONITORS
then pick SORT BY LOWEST PRICE
If you are on a tight budget, consider the 15 inch for $129.99. You see, if you measure your old TUBE, that 17 inch monitor is only about 16inches across. But the 15 inch LCD will be exactly 15 inches of viewable screen, so you won't lose much.

Here is why you WOULD NOT get an LCD:

1. The new Flat Panel monitor takes up less space, so now the boss will pile more work on my desk.
2. With the old CRT monitors, you can't see the dust that piles up behind it. You can see the dust with the new Flat Panel monitors. It's gross!
3. Hey, I can't put stuffed animals and action figures on top of my new Flat Panel monitor..
4. Since the new Flat Panel Monitor does not generate any heat, my office cubicle will be colder next winter.
5. The edge around the Flat Panel Monitor is much smaller now, where do I tape up photos of my kids?
6. Since the new Flat Panel Monitor's height can be adjusted, what do I do with these old Law Books (which used to live under the huge CRT monitor to raise it up about an inch and a half)?
7. Hey, I was used to squinting at the old CRT, I'll miss that.
8. Can I still be part of the litigation if they every discover that the electro-magnetic radiation from old CRT monitors is harmful?
9. I understand that the new Flat Panel Monitors will probably last much longer than the old CRTs. I was looking forward to getting a new one in about 7 years, but now I am stuck with this for 20 or more years?
10. HEY, I miss the Flicker that my old CRT had. The eye strain and headaches that it gave me meant more breaks. Should I be getting a raise in Pay?
11. The old CRT was about as heavy as a ROCK, with the new Flat Panel Monitor, will I be getting a weaker desk?
12. CRT monitors cause damage to the Ozone layer of our planet... without them, it will take longer to get a sun tan.
13. I will miss the out-of focus look, when I can increased the brightness on my CRT.
14. Since the new Flat Panel LCD monitors are lighter, is there a better chance that someone can steal it? Nobody ever considered stealing my old CRT.

It sounds like your graphics drivers are all flipped out, OK where gonna try 2 things.1st go to a icon less area on your screen and right click scroll down to properties and then left click. A window will appear click settings(all the way to the top right) then change the screen resolution to 1024 by 780 pixels. Then click apply on the bottom left. IF this worked it asks you to save the settings click yes.

OK if that doesn't work try this, Left click the start button scroll up to my computer then right click it. Go to properties again, then in this window left click hardware (Top right) In hardware the first Icon you see will be Device manage double click it.You will see several little Icons with pluses next to them, left click the plus next to display adapters. There may be one or two Icons that pop up depending on your graphics strip. double Click the first one not the secondary. It will say in the window of the window weather the device is work properly or not. left click driver.then the update driver button. click yes this time only and keep clicking next.

hopefully this helps(if the Black line never moves your screen may be burned in.) In this case you may need a new moniter

If you have an extra monitor kicking around, or if you can borrow one, hook it up and see if you still have the problem. If you do, it may be your video card. You can try troubleshooting through Add/Remove hardware and reinstalling the drivers.

It also might not be a bad idea to scan for rogue spyware/adware or malware and viruses. They have been know to reek havoc with displays. There are lots of good, free utilities on line. Google for Adaware SE, Spybot S & D, Ewido security suite. Download, install, update and run in safe mode (get there usually by tapping the F8 key before the welcome screen appears). Run scans, delete all they find and reboot.

Good luck.

My best guess is that you need to adjust your monitor. There are usually several buttons at the bottom of the monitor. One will raise a menu that allows you to adjust the height/width of the display and to move it up and down. These menus are usually confusing to use -- don't panic, use +/- or up/down buttons to move up and down the menus.

If the display is fine when you first turn the computer on and then the display stretches out, then this answer doesn't apply.

If that doesn't fix it, then more data is needed.

Sounds like your monitor is going on the fritz and someone is logging on to your computer . Various settings could cause some of the problems . Are you networking with another computer ? Someone could be playing a joke on you

i think that they are the dead pixels which is common to all the aged monitors. But once try to reinstall the graphics drivers

you need to check for updates for the video and also see if your monitor has software you can get .

Also try it in safe mode see if it works if it does just formatt and fix it.

Or do a system restore to when it was working.
