It depends on the circumstances. If you have a "No Soliciting" sign on your front lawn, then you might be able to call the cops. However, cops are often busy doing other cop things and would probably want you to take care of the situation yourself.

They can solicit, to you unless you live in a "no soliciting" community, like an apartment complex, condo complex, or gated community. If you do not live in such a community, a Jehovah witness can knock on your front door. At that moment they are "general invitees" - they have come on to your property with the specific intention to solicit Jehovah Witness materials to you. If you tell them to leave, which you are entitled to do, you would have successfully provided notice to the Jehovah witness that his/her "invitee" status is terminated and is now a trespassor.

At this point in time, the J.W. is afforded the opportunity to leave your property. If the JW refuses to leave (which they almost never do, cause they might go to heck for disturbing your peace) that JW becomes a trespassor. At this point in time you may call the cops. The JW may be charged with disturbing the peace and trespassing, you may be able to bring a private action against that JW for trespassing - however, if no actual damage was caused, your private action could be tossed out by the court for lack of actual, significant damages.

Can you call the cops? Yes, but by the time the cops get there, the JW may be gone - in which case, nothing has been achieved. Your best option is to

1. Post a "No Soliciting/Trespassing" sign
2. Tell them to leave
3. If 1 & 2 fail, then call the cops.

I don't think calling the police after 1 or 2 visits is necessary. They have more important things to take care. However, if the witnesses repeatedly visit you after you tell them not to, that's another matter. Are you letting them into your house? You have control over who enters your home. Simply tell them not to come back. Anybody in their right mind wouldn't waste their time. You must be giving them signals to come back. Be nice but firm that you are not interested. You should be able to handle this without calling the police. I doubt that the police would come anyhow, unless they witnesses won't leave your property. The only other alternative that I see is to get a pet crocodile and ask them if they want to go to your backyard and feed the "kitty."

It is probably not legally wrong to contact the police when Jehovah's Witnesses have come to your door, as long as you have a clearly posted "No Trespassing" sign. Otherwise, the police will simply become annoyed with the homeowner.

A clearly posted "No Trespassing" sign will usually keep unwanted visitors away. If an unwanted visitor is already at your door, you could simply tell the person you do not wish to speak with them and close the door.

This once happened to me: I worked the midnight to eight AM shift on Saturday nights, and when I got home I hit the sack.

Promptly at ten AM there would be a knock at the door... Jehova's Wittnesses , usually 5 or 6, male and female, trying to get their foot in the door. Several times, I told them that I worked the night shift, and I asked them nicely not to bother me again.

But every Sunday morning, just as I was settling in for a nice long snooze, there came the knock at the door. Since politeness didn't seem to work, I decided to try the shock treatment.

The following Sunday when they came I answered the door stark naked, scratching myself in the privates. They never returned to bother me again.

Try my method, it works!

It is OK if they do something illegal, such as trespassing, making a public
menace ... littering ...

However, by-and-large, they don't do that.

If you don't post a "Do not trespass" sign and they don't do anything
illegal, the only thing you can do is create a temporary state of trespass.

That is, tell them to leave and that you no longer allow them to be on
your property - deny them legal access. You might even keep around
a "No trespassing" sign which you post when they knock on your door.

If they don't go away given "reasonable egress", then you can call the
police - and in some states shoot at them.

Do, however, give them reasonable egress (a means and time to leave).

Well the cops can't do anything about someone coming to our door. We don't have to open it. But I hate when they come to my house, and feel like calling the cops. I think most people feel the same way. One way to get rid of them is to tell them not to come back on your land that if they do you will call the cops. I tell them off every time, they bug me to death. They are a cult. No one should talk to them.

My mom yelled at some jehovah witnesses once. She actually called from work and found out they were there. It was horrible but she had her reasons. My father's the one that talks to them. I don't mind them, but I have trouble believing a lot of what they say. The best way is to tell them not to come to your house anymore, instead of calling the cops.

Coming to your house & knocking on the door is not a crime. Doing it again after you've told them not to, or refusing to leave, is a crime--but a very minor one, and it's hard to get the police involved with that kind of thing. (They really, really don't want to spend their time telling annoying salesmen to go away, whether the salesmen are pushing vacuum cleaners or eternal salvation.)

But if they continue to return, or get adamant about it, or insist they have a right to witness to you, that's harassment, and you can involve the police in that.

It's easy to get rid of them without involving the cops. Invite them in to pray, then start getting taking your clothes off... explain that you like to meet God totally natural, and that means you only pray while naked. They'll go away & not come back!

(I'm told that answering the door naked also makes them go away, but you might not be able to arrange that in advance.)

Wait a minute everybody....wasn't it Jesus himself who when giving his disciples instruction on how to conduct their ministry told them to go to the people at their homes?(Matthew 10:7,11-13) How can you fault someone for believing they should follow these instructions? Acts 20:20 shows that this method continued. In fact, if you check your history, in the 1940's Jehovah's Witnesses were given the "legal" right by the Supreme Court to go from house-to-house. These words being those of the former statesman Henry B. Gonzales.

JW's do not believe that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. When they came to my door, I politely sat with them (on the front porch... I don't know whether they'd be casing my house... JWs have been arrested for crimes like anyone else!)... and listened to part of their rap. I then said, "May I ask a question?"
"Surely," one of the well dressed women said.
"Do you believe that Jesus Christ has come again in the flesh?"
At this point, they stood, did not say goodbye, but left my porch. When they got to the end of the sidewalk, they shook their feet, as if shaking the dust of my doorway off, wrote in a book, and continued on their way. They have not returned. When they come near my house, they make a wide berth, as if they are afraid to walk too near the sidewalk leading to my porch. Too bad. I was going to offer them lemonade! :-P 25 years JW free!
