Life has been terrible to me so why should I pray?

If you need someone else to give you a reason, then your heart really isn't into it. There's no sense wasting your time if you really don't believe in it.

I am not sure what religion you are, but as a Hindu I pray to God because it helps focus and concentrate my mind. For the most part, most Hindu prayers are also thoughts for the day more than requesting something from God. They remind us to be mindful and aware of God all around us. Mantras, which are also like prayers and often said along with prayers, are said to be formed with certain sounds (words with no real meaning) that are part of the subtle sounds that vibrate throughout the universe and that when we say the mantra we form a connection in the universe with those vibrations (which of course manifested from God, too). Om is the most sacred sound and is said in every mantra and the begining of every prayer. Om is said to be the first sound of creation and thus it represents God. In the Sanskrit alphabet the sound was so important that it got its own letter which today is a common symbol seen on many Hindu website, on Hindu jewelry, etc. It has sort of become The symbol of Hinduism (although Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism also use the symbol and same meaning). It is said just chanting the sound Om will bring peace upon that person while they chant it and connect them with that sound in the universe. Om is the most basic prayer, the most basic mantra.

So, that's why I pray as a Hindu. Again, though I am not sure what religion you are, but every religion has it's reasons for why one should pray (even Buddhists and Taoists pray and yet they do not necessarily believe in God.....there isn't a God in Taoism, there is just Tao which is undefined and then Buddhism leaves that question open to the individual).

Because he will help you. But Rome wasn't bulit in day. Neither will a prayer or two save your life. So if that's the plan don't bother

But if you would really like to know what this God stuff is all about then study it and practice it like you would anything else you would like to master.

Get a Bible and start with any one of the four Books about the life of Jesus (Matthew, Mark,Luke or John) . Read slowly. And if you don't undertstand try reading it again. If you still don't understand try coming here for help. And pray. It's simple. Just ask him for his mercy and his help.

But be persistent. There is no guarantee of an epiphany.

If you want to tune up your body, spend 20 minutes in the gym each day. You know that will bring results in time.

If you want to tune up your spirit, spend 20 minutes with God each day. That will bring results in time, too.

Sometimes I feel the same way, and say why bother. But I also believe the God truly is my father and just as I want to be close to my earthly father, I know that my father in heaven wants me to be close to him. I think it is when we are feeling that life is terrible, that is the time that we should be praying ( it is also the time the it is the hardest to do it)

If you opened your eyes today you should give thanks! If you've been able to take a single breath, and it feeds your lungs with oxygen, nourishes your brain, and helps your heart beat -- you should give thanks! We should pray not only when things are going our way - but all the time! Sometimes things go 'wrong' so that we become more humble... Don't let arrogance come between you and your Creator! And if you cannot give thanks, then pray instead for patience and strength! I pray that things start going better for you soon!

"In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33

It's a biblical fact that life on earth will be difficult for all of us. Speaking (or praying) with the Lord connects you with a powerful God. He invites us to pour all our cares out to Him, and talking to God will move your life closer to Him. Prayer puts you in a position to be answered by the Lord and to have your eyes opened to Him through salvation in Jesus. Salvation opens the doors to an abundant life in Him.

He's not an uncaring, stone-like God. He is moved by your troubles and pain. The one way to reach God is through prayer. If you want all He has to offer, give your life to Him. He will either remove the pain from your life or walk you through it. If you receive Jesus into your life, you will have His strength and His comfort to hold you up, and His promise to heal the damage that you have suffered.

Maybe you can tell God your problems, and then ask that He set you in the direction He wants you to go. If you can honestly give God control of your life, He will guide it in the way that will give you the most long-term happiness.
