I think, sadly, that it's being used by much of the media and others to try to gain support for liberal democrats.
People forget that the congress and senate voted overwhelmingly to authorize use of force, as did several other countries who joined the coalition. Saddam's firing on aircraft patrolling the no-fly zone was itself a declaration of war, not to mention his choice to ignore the UN resolutions.

Unfortunate that we have to be there. Very unfortunate. If we had known what Saddam would've become maybe we wouldn't've supported him all those decades ago and this could've been prevented. My hope is that things end soon and that we can help the Iraqi people become truly free and self-governing. More than that, I hope that a free Iraq can send a message to the other countries in the area and freedom can spread. However, I don't think it's going to happen soon and I fear things will get worse before they get better. But in the end, once the dust settles and there's a lasting peace... I think the everyone will be better off.
I think that the Middle East, kind of like in Asimov's Empire series, was always going to destroy itself. The role we're playing is one of preventing it from becoming a complete disaster... damage control, as it were. Get the conflict over with while there's tens of thousands involved instead of tens of millions.

Everyone here needs to read Sgt K and take heed. What you see on the news and in the papers is not what's really going on. If you want to know the real story of what's going on in Iraq, you need to seek out a friend or relative who's been there. We are there for the right reason and at the right time. Better on their turf than ours. Whether all you kool aid drinkers out there think so or not, we're winning. The President was right. Get over it.

American women should educate the Iraqi women. They would learn to take a stand and stop taking all of the ----. This war would then end very soon. Men would stop sitting on their duffs and get a job instead of tying on bombs, and wishing for 10 more wives to support thier scrawny butts. This war was not started over oil, or finishing daddy's job. Remember 9/11 anyone.

Wrong execution of the right idea. Although Sgt K is 100% correct. I simply cannot see any viable reasoning behind not using the amount of force needed to accomplish the mission. The Sunni triangle should have been obliterated 2 years ago. There is no reason whatsoever that more and more of my brother Marines have to die so that we can pussyfoot around because we are afraid of looking bad to the rest of the world. Islamofacists only understand one thing. Force. In my estimation, we should give them just that.

I agree with an earlier post that we got involved in this war under false pretenses. Our military is being misused and there needs to be an exit strategy to get our men and women back home. Whether or not a political (or military) resolution has occurred, they should be proud of their deployment. Many battles in wars past have not had clear outcomes, but this is a reflection of a failure in strategy, not in the honorable way in which these soldiers comported themselves. To say that we cannot "cut and run," or, "this job needs to be finished" is a ball and chain to a very flawed war strategy, and puts our soldiers needlessly in harm's way.

I can tell you FOR A FACT, the 95% of the "insurgents" in Iraq are from countries other than Iraq. They come from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Yemen ... just about every country except Iraq. Many speak English very well, and most say the same thing. They have come to Iraq ONLY for the opportunity to kill Americans. With that mindset, there is no talking sense to these people. There is only one thing they understand, and that is the language of firearms, the language of ambush, the language of bombs, the language of death.
We cannot do a lot to influence what or how they think. What we can control to a great degree, though, is the time and place we fight. Our Commander in Chief, President Bush, has chosen now to be the time and Iraq to be the place. It is a decision that the vast majority of people in the military agree with.
If we were not in Iraq fighting these very bad men, many of them would choose to try to come to America to kill Americans. They only want to kill Americans. They go to Iraq because Americans are there, and it is easier for them to get there. If we were not there, they would have no choice but to come to the United States to commite their vile acts.
Who do you think stands a better chance against fighting terrorists? American soldiers who have volunteered to fight them, been trained to fight them and truly understand what needs to be done? Or ordinary American citizens like you and your neighbors?
Where do you think is the better place to fight them? Iraq - where a great many number of terrorists are now concentrated and we can kill many of them at one time? Or in America - where they live amongst us, learn our ways and use that knowledge to kill thousands of us like 9/11?
Make no mistake about it - fighting these terrorists is a necessary evil. If we do not fight them in Iraq now, we would be fighting them in New York tomorrow. Or Los Angeles. Or Houston. Or Topeka. Or Miami.
The men and women of our armed forces see the answer to this question clearly. The put their lives on the line on a daily basis so that you don't have to worry about dying in your own community at the hands of terrorists. It is a task we take on gladly because we truly see what is at stake.
Any life lost is an irreplaceable tragedy that will have unknown impact of the US and the world. At the same time, their sacrifice is saving an untold number of innocent lives who simply want to live life to its fullest.
Realize that for every terrorist we fight and kill over there - by men and women who VOLUNTEER to do it - we make this country a little safer for every American citizen over here.

I obliviously do not like the war, but I find it to be necessary.
I do not Al Queda in my home with my family. No more 9-11.
Whatever it takes, I want to feel safe in my home country.
