I have an XP Home on my CPU, I have a reinstall XP Pro disc, can i simply go into the bios, boot from CD, reinstall with the product key code and basically write-over XP Home and still have all my Program Files, data, etc?

The reason I need XP Pro is that one of my CPU has it and the other don't and they will not network. When I was in windows 2003 server class the instructor said that XP Home will not network.

pop the XP pro CD in, and boot of it. when you get to the screen that talks about recovery console, skip it. then the setup will scan your hard drive to look for a different copy of XP. when you get to this point hit R on that hard drive and it will reinstall the pro copy of XP over the xp home one and have all your file intact.

First of all, what new things do you expect to get from XP Pro? If you do not have an extensive network and server, there is nothing in it that you need. The time and money will only be a waste.

But if you need VPN services or something that you THINK that you need, you can get these to work under Windows XP Home edition. Just ask.

NO! You will wipe everything out if you do that.
To upgrade to Windows XP just boot into XP Home, drop in your CD of XP Pro and follow the menus.

Yes, but you won't like the performance. XP Home allows the installation of Pro, but, having done this dozens of tmes, a backup & restore of your files will be a much easier and better installation.
