I've been thinking about that today and I realise that I never 'became' an atheist. I was never anything else. I may have given lip-service to the concept of God, as I was a child and there were big people around me telling me that there was a God, but I never, ever as far as I can remember actually 'felt' God in any way. And I certainly never prayed.
My Mom believes in God, but she was good enough to keep that kind of stuff away from me.
I felt better when I realised that I had come to accept myself for who I am.

I felt better... still do for that matter. I think the effects of being raised to believe in god for almost 15 years has definetly had an impact even now. One of my main issues in life was how in the hell can everyone and everything be such a lie. And while fantasy is fun to believe in for maybe a second, you know it's not real. I mean, the whole thing is just bullsh*t... I'm not going to get started or I would be going on forever. I love knowing that I am the ONLY ONE responsible for me. Morally, ethically, etc.... I love knowing that because I love knowing the truth. And that's the only truth there is:)

well, thinking I don't apply to the disclaimers it's nbever really been an issue. As an adult I live my own life and my religious beleifs or lack thereof are not something I discuss with my parents. Though not fervent beleivers I think both of them do have some form of religious belief and both were seperately raised in religious homes. The fact that I don't believe in a deity watching over us is little concern as I maintain a degree of morality in actions towards other people and I think that's what matters more to them, they would rather I be a good person not beleiving in God rather than a bad or apathetic person who did. So overall it hasn't made me feel one way or the other, I think that i don't act much different than if I had faith, but now the responsibilities of what I agree with and don't is purely decided upon by myself.

When I was a Christian (for 28 years) I'm now 57. I often wondered why God would allow:
little babies to born with no brain or no legs or arms or eyes or with a penis and a vagina.
900 people to drown in a ferry accident.
Millions of people to get cancer.
et..etc......etc......ad infinitum
Now that I am an Atheist, it makes more sense. I can see that "Natural Selection" (Evolution) causes these things out of it's constant "Mutational Drive" as it strives to find the fittest.
So I now feel "MUCH" better than when I thought I believed in a "God".

When religious I used to feel blissful .... (NOT!) All kidding aside, it has provided me with emotional and intellectual freedom. I can approach the humanities and science without that stultifying veil of dogmatic censure.
Actually, eventually it made it possible for me to get to know what religion really is as a human institution. I've even been able to understand and appreciate some select religious people for their fusion of hope and service to humanity. These are the same folks who in my religious past would have seemed "dangerous apostates" and sorely lacking in adherence to "the word."

I was raised christian and I'm now agnostic. I'm happier now that I'm not a christian, because I don't have to accept the idea of god. It's a lot more freeing to think on my own about things instead of just accepting god's existence.

I feel smarter, I feel less judgmental, I feel better knowing that good people like Ghandi are not suffering in hell just because the didn't believe in Jesus.

Better and easier. Relief although it was a many year long process from less caring to final realisation.
