What would be a polite way of letting an authority figure you meet for the first time know that you like to be called something other than the name they have been given. For example if most people call you by a shortened form of your name, how can you let them know this? "Could you call me ... please?" seems a bit 'bossy', but a sort of "hey, feel free to call me..." seems a bit too informal. I should've worked out a way round this by now but I've never seemed able to manage it. How do other people tackle this tricky situation?

I would just tell him or her that by the way, you prefer to be called 'insert name here' rather than your given name. It's not bossy or informal. :)

How about the tried and true, "Most people call me _____, you can too."

It's definitely more informal, but also demonstrates a level of comfort with the boss that she might appreciate.

A simple "I go by " or if you changed your name, then say "I decided to go by " will suffice.

Your tone of voice has more to do with how you will be percieved than how you say it.

Say it in non-accusatory, non-demanding way AND with a smile and you'll be just fine.

Try this'

" I don't mean to sound snobby, but because this is a professional atmosphere (work) I would rather go by my full name. Outside of work I use _________, but I think it sends a better message if I use my full name here. You don't mind do you?"

Next time your boss calls you by name, casually say, "you can can me ____." Smile and be polite and you should be fine.
