I take it the cut is on his foot. If it is very deep and bleeding alot it may need stitches. Also how he did it will depend on the need for hospital. If there may be debris in it then he will need it cleaned by a nurse.

Before doctors there were cuts but sword wounds were not allowed to close at the skin until the insides had rejoined. Dirt can be sealed in a deep wound. Men are able to bleed a small amount without running to a doctor that might put him on some pill and ruin his health. Bleeding is stopped by elevating or covering the hole and blood is cleansing and will disinfect the tissues.

I'm going to assume the cut is on his foot instead of him being very clumsy. You don't mention how old the cut is, but if it is fairly fresh you could try to put a compression dressing on it and keep the foot elevated above heart level.
Compression dressing= One roll of roller gauze still in a roll held over the wound by an ACE Bandage. DO NOT wrap the ACE too tight. To check tightness, when you apply a squeeze to his toenail it should take no more than 3 seconds for the nail bed to turn pink again. If that doesn't happen, you need to loosen the ACE.

Even if it bleeding stops, you should still go to the hospital to show it to a doctor. Go now.

It's quite possible that he cut a blood vessel or something. He DEFINITELY should go to the hospital and see if he needs stitches.

Yes. If he's bleeding a lot, then it is wise to get medical attention. If you don't, he can suffer blood loss or serious infection.
