To harden on a cake? After icing the cake, let it sit untouched for about five minutes to allow it to "crust over." It may take longer if you icing is thinner. Once it's hardened a bit, you can take a smooth paper towel and gently rub over the icing to give it a perfectly smooth, how-did-you-do-that, "I've never seen anything so perfect" cake icing ever!

Cover the frosting well and it will stay fresh for up to a week in the fridge. It will harden at that temperature, similar to what happens to butter when it is chilled. Just let it come back to room temperature before eating it or spreading it on a cupcake. Meringue buttercream won't work because the eggwhites separate and deflate when allowed to sit. Royal icing should be fine for 3 to 5 days.

In my experience, like the cake I'm making tonight, it 'hardens' as in when it gets colder it makes a thin crust but is still semi-soft due to the sugar and flavoring you add. Generally buttercream doesn't weep if made properly for a few days. I find it amazing to decorate with but not to build or stack upon as if doing gingerbread or really decorative things you want to stay hard.

In my experience, buttercream frosting never got really hard for me. It got a kind of crust (not gross) on the outside, but stayed somewhat soft on the inside.
If you are looking for an icing that will harden (like for cookie decorating or gingerbread construction), I would recommend royal icing. It hardens like glue within a few hours to overnight, depending on your climate.
Hope this helps!

depends on the type of buttercream. american? about an hour. but it might harden faster if you place it in a cool place.not the fridge! that will make it weep and condense. french or italian? will only harden if you chill it.

Possibly a week in the fridge but always smell for odd/rancid smell as that would be the sign that it's past prime.

I have bad news for you... it doesn't. The butter in the buttercream keeps it from happening.
