On the subject of the Germans...yes they have a full army, navy and air force. Their forces are still very powerful (their Leopard 2 panzer tanks can easily match the US M1A1s, their Tornadoes and Eurofighters are very good fighter/attack aircraft, and they also have advanced submarines which are still called U-boats)...though now it is used primarily in defence of the Fatherland and in support of UN/NATO operations. Japan also has a military...whether you know it or not. They are collectively known as the Japanese Air, Land and Sea Self-Defense Forces. Their Air Force is outfitted with Japanese versions of USA F-15 and F-4 fighter jets and an advanced fighter called the F-2 which is based on the F-16. The Land Force has tanks that look and perform a lot like the M1A1 and the Leopard 2 (the Type 90 tank). The Sea Force has more ships (but no carriers) and submarines than most of Southeast Asia combined. What differs Germany and Japan though is that while the Germans still have a right to declare war especially in the interest of defence (as during the Cold War when they were the likely targets of any Soviet Invasion or subterfuge), the Japanese currently maintain a provision in their Constitution that explicitly denies them the right to declare war but allows them to maintain a powerful armed-force in the interest of self-defense (thus the name of their armed forces). The Japanese have the right to revise this provision (since it is their Constitution), but have chosen for various reasons to not do so yet. Some however think that due to the threat from NoKor and the rise of China in East Asia...the Japanese may eventually try to change the provision to give them more leeway as it is to respond to such threats.

Japan will probably never get to have an army. Germany has one only because when East Germany separated they disobeyed the Geneva Convention & UN ruling. Since recombining, many ships, taks & etc have been destroyed or sold off. What samll part of their army is only a defensive army & used to help other nations like Afghanistan.

The Japanese Self Defense Force is QUITE capable. it is only by their own self imposed limitations that they are a self defense force and not an aggresive military. However, that may change in the next few decades as Korea steps up their efforts to antagonize Japan, China and other nations.

I will answer the question this way, China does not wish Japan to rearm. If the United States gets little help from China Japan will be rearmed because of the proximity to North Korea and intermediate range nukes and anti missile batteries will be stationed there. We can quibble over who owns what and operates what, missiles should not overfly Japan in any event. They are an ally.

Your info is very out of date. The JSDF has a full Army,Navy & Airforce. By their constitution they choose not to expand there power. They have had full control over their military for 40 years.

currently it is against the Japanese constitution to have a offensive military power, they can maintain a military but only for defensive purposes.

Why would they want to? It costs alot of money to have a military and the U.S. is carrying that burden for them.
