IQ or intelligence quotient, measures certain aspects of problem solving and pattern recognision. My understanding is as follows: Theoretically IQ is the mental age divided by the actual age of the test taker. The the theoretical range is unbounded. The norm is 100. IQ is determined by multiplying a derived quotient by 100. I.E. if you are mentally 25 and actually 50, the quotient would be 0.5; the IQ would be 50. If you are menatally 25 and actually 20 the quotient would be 1.25; the IQ would be 125. Funny you should use the term idiot. Idiot and moron were a couple of the terms originally associated with specific ranges of below normal IQ scores.

IQ is just a quantitative value assigned to someone's ability to recognize patterns quickly. IQ test can't test things like creativity, wit resourcefulness, or many other qualities that would be deemed "intelligence." While good pattern recognition is a useful bar trick, measuring children's IQ does more harm than good.

While knowing your IQ may be trivially interesting, don't count on it indicating how well you will do in life. I had a HS friend with a 170 IQ and perfect SAT - he ended up in the AK state pen before he was 25.

Give me perseverance, resourcefulness and good contacts any day.

100 is the average, but you have to look deeper than just a number to really understand what intelligence is.
A mark of intelligence that I've always liked is how well somebody copes with novel situations, how they approach something they have no experience dealing with. This seems a much more profound definition than being able to tell which shape doesn't belong in a group.
