Remember that the flea doesn't live on your pets, it only hops on to feed them jumps off. One effective way is to spry your home to keep them out of it.

If it is just fleas you are trying to get rid of you can add garlic powder to their dog food and this will naturally repel fleas. You do not use a lot just a little like you would season to taste for your own food so not a lot. It will work and is very inexpensive. Unfortunately if you are wanting to get rid of tics and prevent mosquito's from getting them than the expensive stuff is the best and there is just no getting around it, if you try in the long run you will have spent more money finding cheaper solutions than if you had just gotten the expensive stuff in the first place. I hope this helps and seriously just for fleas alone the garlic powder really works. Plus it is something most people already have so trying it will not put you out anything but time. It does take a few days to get into their system before you will notice a difference.

You're right, Hartz does work and there have been problems with dogs having bad reaction to it.

I use Bio Spot. It is otc and less expensive than Frontline and Advantage. I've used it for over 10 yrs on my 3 and on all the rescues that have come through. I never see a flea or tick.

I use frontline plus on my aussies and have had great results. You will pay about $30-$40 for it but it is for a 6 month supply-which of course would be less than the $10.00 a month.
It not only kills fleas but,the eggs and mosquitos.
The price also goes by how much your dog weighs.I wouldnt mess with the stuff that you get in the stores. They dont really work.

I use sentinal for heart worm, which is also a flea and tick preventative. If mosquitoes are really bad (like this year in Michigan) then I'll get them Advantix too. My advice is take your dog to a groomer and have him dipped. While he's out get a flea spray and spray all carpet and upholstery in your house. Then try putting him on something like front line or advantix. All the flea preventatives on the market are just that, preventatives. If you already have an infestation then you need different products that kill the fleas, not ones that prevent them.

DONT use ANY flea medication!!! The BEST way to rid and prevent fleas is the easiest and cheapest way in the world...and its all natural!
Put GARLIC in with their food. I use about 1-2 teaspoons in the food. It depends on the size of the animal and the weight. Play it by ear, using a little at a time to get them used to the taste. I have done this for over 15 years with my rotties, and they have NEVER had fleas!!!
GOOD LUCK!

You get what you pay for. I have been a dog owner for over 15 years, the cheap stuff does NOT work. Flea collars and powders are a joke. I like an all-in-one mediction for the fleas, ticks and mosquitos. It's worth the extra money

Use advantage, Frontline or Advantix. The over the counter medications look the same, are marketed the same but are a quarter of the price because a) they dont work, b) the compound in them is toxic and can kill cats and sometimes dogs and c) is not safety tested.

Frontline I have found is the best, but you have to make sure of your dogs weight. It plays a big factor in the strength and if it works. I can see a change in about 2 hours after applying it.
Also, if you have fleas in your carpet. salt your rugs with table salt, leave on for a day and vacumn it up, oh make sure to get rid of that vacumn bag after

Frontline plus has worked best on both my dogs. Also, have you considered having your yard treated. I do and it's good for fleas, ants and mosquitos. It is a little pricey, but it cuts down on all the unwelcome pests!

There is a pill you can get from your vet and within 30 minutes all the fleas will fall off and die. I used it this week and it really worked, fleas are history. Call your vet and ask about it.
