Seeing your question immediately reminded Dorothy of those two frightfully witty comedians, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. They sang a delightful little ditty all about saying good-bye. We've looked every where to find a recording of it but no luck, so here are the words.
Now is the time to say goodbye
Now is the time to yield a sigh
Yield it, yield it, yield that heavy sigh!
Now is the time to wend our waaaayeeeeee
Until we meet again
Some sunny day.
Goodbye, Goodbye
We're leaving you now
Tattybye
Goodbye
We wish you all goodbye
Fartatata, fartatata...
etc.

Bye. Goodbye sounds too awkward and that second syllable takes too much effort.
