u have got to go the famous weekends market only operate from morning to evening on sat/sun only ....the MRT in bangkok as as convenient as in SG ...most of the tourist attractions and shopping mall is near to train station ..if take a cab have to take those run by meter if not thay will raise the prices high as the sky for a single trip ....never take a tutu as u will pay more and will not njoy for the ride ...hotels wise i would recommend novetel ..its simply fantastic if u dun mind to pay more ...u can try the street foods as is very cheap and taste nice if u dun mind the hygiene standards but beware not to take any tiger prawns as i have two friends encounter food poisoning in bkk eating that ...

For budget airlines I can recommend Air Asia. They are cheap and fly a lot of destinations, not only in Thailand but whole South East Asia and some other destinations.

if u need budget and need fun should go Khaosan Rd they have budget hotel from 10U$D , good idea u can book air tickets with tour agent. And the best hotels in Sukhumvit area .

Gotta do some diving off of Phucket and the island of Phi Phi and check out the markets, soi cowboy, and temples in bangkok. You can hike in Chaing Mai too.

I'd check orbitz.com as far as airfare, hotels, transportation, etc.
