I considered buying a S60, 2.4 TD, is there anything to know or be warned about?

THE S60 IS A NICE RIDE, BUT THE VISIBILITY IS AWFUL. YOU ALMOST FEEL LIKE YOU'RE SITTING IN A POD GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. THE PROBLEM IS THAT VOLVO HAS OVERENGINEERED THEM FOR SAFETY. THEY ARE SO SOLID THAT THE REAR POSTS ARE TOO THICK AND GET A LOT OF BLIND SPOTS. YOU'LL BE CRANING YOUR NECK WHEREVER YOU GO. ALSO, ANY PROBLEM WITH A VOLVO THAT INVOLVES CODES GOING TO THE COMPUTER HAS TO BE FIXED AT THE DEALER, WHICH PROBABLY WILL CHARGE UPWARDS OF $90-100 PER HOUR. VOLVO DOES NOT LICENSE PRIVATE GARAGES TO HAVE A LOT OF THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT THAT THE DEALERS USE, WHICH FORCES YOU TO GO TO THEM (THERE ARE EVEN LAWSUITS AGAINST VOLVO FOR THIS). THAT'S A PROBLEM, BECAUSE ANYTIME AN IDIOT LIGHT POPS UP ON THE DASH, BE READY TO FORK OUT AT LEAST $100. I AGREE, GO WITH A BMW. GET YOURSELF INTO A NICE 525 OR 530. IT MAY HAVE TO BE OLDER AND HAVE A FEW MORE MILES, BUT IT IS ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE CARS BMW HAS EVER BUILT AND YOU'LL TAKE MUCH LESS OF A HIT ON DEPRECIATION WHEN YOU GO TO GET RID OF IT. NEED SOMETHING A LITTLE BETTER IN THE SNOW? GO WITH THE 3-SERIES XI, PREFERRABLE A 325. THESE HAVE LESS FRILLS THAN THE 330 WHICH MEANS LESS STUFF THAT CAN BREAK. YOU CAN GET A NICE 2001 OR 2002 WITH LOW MILES FOR THE SAME PRICE AS AN S60.

GOOD LUCK,

I've got a S40. I believe that the 60's are quite a bit better, but the 40's (first model year following redesign) weren't that hot. Nice car, but quirky. The 60's have a better reputation but how much better, I'm not sure.

One thing I know for sure is that Volvo service is a bit harder and a lot more expensive than some other brands. Parts are not cheap and the labor rate is pretty high typically. Naturally there are aftermarket parts and alternative service providers, but they often charge more because Volvo parts are even more expensive.

Yes, it's a volvo, not as good as the competition. Volvo is giving those cars away, that should tell you something. Go with a BMW
