mainly in the joints - big toes and finger joints, mainly thumbs. the area will appear red and swollen and be hot to the touch. doctors can run a blood test called a uric acid test to check for high levels of uric acid in your blood, or they can take a sample of fluid directly from the affected joint - high uric acid levels are indicative of gout.
