mainly in the joints - big toes and finger joints, mainly thumbs. the area will appear red and swollen and be hot to the touch. doctors can run a blood test called a uric acid test to check for high levels of uric acid in your blood, or they can take a sample of fluid directly from the affected joint - high uric acid levels are indicative of gout. My friend gets gout and he can hardly walk his Ankles hurt so bad.

The pain is in the affected joint. It is most commonly in the big toe, but also can be an elbow, wrist, knee or ankle.
