I would like to get an OS from any company (but preferably from microsoft, apple or linux) that is old and that would be able to run on a pentium 3. Any OS would suite me.

How and where can i get an old OS?
Is it still illegall to download them for free and are they still under copyright?
Can I run an old OS on a newer machine with pentium 3?

PS: i don't want to use any torrents and a legal solution would be better.

The first link is to find Win98 Legal version for 40 bucks

Second link is to Linux Distributions, which are free.

The only OS that's truly free are Linux Distros so if you don't want to spend money, that's the only way to go. Otherwise to legally run Windows or MacOS, you need to have the disks and a license.

Considering your PC is a Pentium III, I wouldnt classify it as too old to function with any newer OS. I'd suggest running a Windows 2000 on it, Windows 98 at the least. However, I'd recommend staying away from Windows XP/ME as you will not get the best performance, you'd only be meeting their minimal system requirements if not less.

Nontheless, to answer your question, you are still able to legally purchase Windows 98 and 2000 OS from third party stores online that offer genuine disks. However, starting July 11, 2006, keep in mind that Microsoft will no longer be providing support for those OSs. However, if you really have your mind set on a legal Windows 98/2000, you can get one at https://shop.edirectsoftware.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=16224 or about $70 US.

Maybe you could find something at a yard sale :-) if it's the right yard. I still have my M$-DOS 3.3 3.5 inch floppy installation & supplemental disks. I also still have my M$-DOS 5 5.25-inch floppy. But I still want to keep them ;-)
