Halitosis is the scientific name for bad breath, and it can be caused by several things. Temporary halitosis is something you're already familiar with. That's what happens when you eat something that smells, when you first wake up in the morning, when you don't brush your teeth and tongue, smoking, that sort of thing.

Chronic halitosis is a bit different. It can be an indicator of a few diseases. It can be a simple over-population of certain bacteria in your mouth. Or it can be an indicator for something more serious, such as in chronic liver failure; it can make your breath smell like a decomposing body.

These are of many kinds:
Pyorrhea caused by Bacteria and aggravated by Entamoeba gingivitis results into bed smell.
Improper brushing-----food particles in mouth are attacked by microorganisms and there may also be fermentation reactions.
Some foods like garlic, onion, asfatodia contain alkaloids and are recognized as bad by some people.
It can be well stated by the example of alcohol.
Alcohol after entering in blood is excreted out from lungs in form of vapors. It is one of the way of our body to remove alcohol from blood. As smell of alcohol comes from lungs therefore freshener doesn't work. And it is true for some other food components also eg. cigarette, some drugs, and foods etc.

i'm not sure, but to make your breath smell better you're suppost to drink hot tea in the morning. maybe since it's hot it like, fries the bad smelling-stuff.

and like everyone else said, try brushing your teeth, or cutting down on garlic, onions, or any food that has a strong scent :)

what they eat and drinkn and also if they have lots of plague (sp?) or don't brush and floss. Sometimes if you are sick, like you have digestive problems, your breath smells bad too because it comes up from your stomach.
