The key is "in the name of". People use the name very, very loosely. In our society the name of God is almost more often part of a curse than a proper noun. Why do people steal? They take things that are not theirs so they can have what they do not own. If I elicit the name of God to do some dirty deed, I am stealing something I do not possess in order to do something I should not do, something I could not otherwise justify.

A Misleading “Angel of Light”
According to the Bible, there is a very simple answer. Posing as “an angel of light,” Satan the Devil has misled millions into following his teachings rather than God’s. (2 Corinthians 11:14) The apostle John showed that Satan’s influence is so extensive that “the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) John knew that Satan was “misleading the entire inhabited earth.”—Revelation 12:9.
What have been the consequences of this? Satan has promoted religious systems that on the surface appear to be holy. They have “a façade of ‘religion,’” but their true condition is exposed by the evil fruitage they produce. (2 Timothy 3:5, Matthew 7:15-20) Instead of helping to solve mankind’s problems, religion actually becomes part of the problem.
Statistics also indicate that there is a large gap between many people’s religious convictions and their actions. For instance, “sociologists note that some of the highest-crime areas of the country also happen to be places where religious belief and practice are strongest,” says writer Jeffery Sheler.
This should not be surprising. Why? Because as far back as the first century, the apostle Paul warned fellow Christians to beware of those who “publicly declare they know God, but [who] disown him by their works.” (Titus 1:16) Additionally, Paul told the young man Timothy that “the last days” would be marked by people “having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power.”—2 Timothy 3:1, 5.
“Having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power.” (2 Timothy 3:5) The Bible has the power to change lives for the better. (Ephesians 4:22-24) Yet, many today use their religion as a screen behind which they carry on unrighteous activities that displease God. Lying, stealing, and sexual misconduct are often condoned by religious leaders. Many religions preach love but support warfare. “In the name of the Supreme Creator,” observes an editorial in the magazine India Today, “human beings have perpetrated the most abominable atrocities against their fellow creatures.” In fact, the two bloodiest conflicts of recent times—World Wars I and II—erupted in the heart of Christendom.

It is my belief that religion doesn't ask their believers to do this. the atrocities are created by man, and the human element that is in religion.
In each religions past, somewhere, there have been such things happen. This is part of man coming to grips with something that they want everyone else in the world to believe. So...man tends to force or want to force issues when they so totally believe something in such a way.
The more restrictive the religion seems to be the more this tendency seems to pop up. Even among Christian religions this shows up. Look at present day belief's in the USA...some chruchs are promoting racial or sexual bigotry in the name of God...while others are trying to bridge a way to accept others.
We also have one group telling everyone that all other groups arre wrong. The only way to go to heaven is to believe in God as they say you must.
Atrocities in tha name of God are just an excuse for some to do what they want, or feel like and then justify their belief's. It is wrong in Gods eyes, whichever God one chooses to worship.
Any creator God wouldn't want his creations doing such things. It would be like a father having four children and wanting one of them to do something like that...it wouldn't be right at all.
It doesn't validate any religion, and in the end it only serves to make that religion suspect to everyone that see's the atrocities being commited.

It does not validate religion but it allows those who plan and carry out attrcities to dissociate themselves from blame by imagining that they are latter day crusaders. Perhaps they enjoy the evil of their acts but dare not say so , so they blame religion. I suppose its one of the best con tricks in history to blame responsibility on what cannot be proven or fully disputed. Clever eh!!

It is egoism rooted from greed ,ignorance ,hatre the three toxicants that emotionalise people to kill in the name of religion .Once people started to get ego and they start to forget that religions are compassionate based on wisdom ,and treasure peace and life at all cost, then conflicts and clashes and even wars come into being ,the idea of going to war and resort to violence to resolve conflicts come from the mind ,and arising from hatre ,greed and ignorance of the truth (egoism) , and toxicate human thinking first before violence is allowed to take place.
The best mean to resolve conflict in the name of religion is stop blaming others ,but seeking the truth within your inner self to undestand the nature of conflict ,if somebody is at fault remind yourself not to make the same mistake ,if you are at fault repent .
The world can be changed for the better if only we stop pointing fingers at others for our problems ,and we ourselves initiate changes first ,and start to practise compassion, loving kindness based on wisdom inside out ,and make effort to tame the enemy ( the three toxicants) within yourselves and train your mindset to be replaced by compassion ,and loving kindness ,sooner wisdom would be illuminating your way .
The mind is like your little garden when you get rid of the unwanted weeds ,it should be replaced with beautiful flowers ,other wise weeds would come back for sure to fill take up the space again .

More people have been killed in the name of 'God' than any other reason. You should look at a website called the Asatru Alliance. They have holidays dedicated to people who died in horrible ways because they would not convert from Asatru (think Vikings) to Christianity.

What if someone killed someone in the name of you? Would this validate who you are or who is doing this?

A true Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ's teachings and keeps all his commandments, including Jesus' command to love our enemies and to pray for those persecuting us. Those who do not obey all of Jesus' commandments are not true Christians, even though they may claim to be. Jesus told us how we can recognize true Christians from the false, so-called "Christians."
He said in Matthew 7:15-23: "15 “Be on the watch for the false prophets that come to you in sheep’s covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruits you will recognize them. Never do people gather grapes from thorns or figs from thistles, do they? 17 Likewise every good tree produces fine fruit, but every rotten tree produces worthless fruit; 18 a good tree cannot bear worthless fruit, neither can a rotten tree produce fine fruit. Every tree not producing fine fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire. Really, then, by their fruits you will recognize those men.
“Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will. 22 Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?’ 23 And yet then I will confess to them: I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness."
False religion has shown its rotten fruitage in other ways. For example, though the Bible says to “love your neighbor,” religious leaders throughout the world have zealously supported and promoted warfare.—Matthew 22:39.
The Bible says much the same thing: “Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 11:14, 15) Just as many wicked men pretend to be good, Satan deceives people with ministers who appear to be righteous but whose works are wicked and whose fruitage is rotten.
Throughout the world, religious leaders have preached love, peace, and goodness, but they have practiced hatred, war, and ungodliness. The Bible describes them well. It says: “They publicly declare they know God, but they disown him by their works.”—Titus 1:16.
How does Jehovah God regard false religion’s role in killings and wars? God’s indictment of false religion, recorded at Revelation 18:5, states: “Her sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her acts of injustice to mind.” False religion’s complicity with the political rulers of the world amounts to such bloodguilt, such a mass of accumulated sins, that God cannot possibly ignore it. He will soon completely eliminate this stumbling block on the way to true peace.—Revelation 18:21.
