Because English is by far the best language out there. They don't use stupid gender for inanimate objects.

It would seem obvious...the United States, despite all it's troubles, is pretty much the military and economic power in the world...at least until the Chinese take over. The U.S. speaks English. It's becoming the common language used in the world economy, in the airline industry, and most other venues that bring all countries together. Can you imagine the chaos if a Spanish only speaking pilot tried to land his 747 in Tokyo whose flight controllers only spoke Japanese? English is not "taking over like a virus" as you ask, it's bringing the world together. My question is why not English? In a couple of decades we'll all be having to learn Mandarin anyway!

as for the comment just made about english being easy to learn, I know a lot of people from all over the world who say it is very hard to learn. I know people who speak three languages even and talk about how hard English is. Linguists who work at my school say it is the hardest because of all the rules and exceptions and how so many words that are the same can mean different things and such.
The single most spoken language in the world at home is Mandarin. Just thought I would throw that out there. I wish I knew where the source for that one is.

English is the main language of the internet so it is appropriate that it spreads like a virus.

It works in the same way as virus - it is contagious and it talks to adjacent cells. Therefor it transports information effectively, because it is able to go forward into action. To compare it to a virus may be useful, but it is certainly not helpful to create a respectful society. But then again, I understand from your unstated question that you perceive English as offensive in the first place since it invades an unfriendly environment and takes over. If this is the case, the best way to cure the 'virus' is not to use (strenghten) it, but to counter-act by fighting it with your own brand of language vitamines (local language). But be assured, it may be better to NOT view it as an enemy to begin with, but as a friend that is there to connect all of us and bring health in the society, rather than disease. It is a powerful tool to transform and has a generous history to adsorb local culture.

My opinion is that the english language is the easiest to learn. Everyone always seems to want to go to the US and Canada and the main language of both countries are english, peppered with french and spanish.

English is the WORLD LANGUAGE!
Would you have most people on the world speaking Tagalog?
Your use of the word VIRUS tells me that you would rather have another language in use....You seem to be against Westernization too...........

Because, name shake, there's nothing wrong with English- except that there are two versions of it. I suspect it's the British version that's spreading. Why shouldn't all peoples be able to speak to and understand one another?
