Perhaps you could search through your junk piles
I did an art piece for school using all the random things i could find in my shed (screws, nuts and bolts, washers etc)
You never know, you may find something really interesting...

I'm assuming your project is to be photographic. If you have kids of your own or younger brothers or sisters - anyone under the age of 4. Give them your camera. Let them take the shots of the things that mean something to them. It's really interesting to see how the world looks from their perspective and to see the things they like. I gave a camera to my 3 year old when we were on a trip in the car. She's saw the journey in a completely different way. She shot about 120 image - maybe 12-15 were really interesting. The best one was of her shoelaces!
Just an idea. Hope you like it

Go to your local library and look at many art books or check out Art.com for some inspiration its original, when you put your personal touch on it, say favorite color, things you use everyday, Sweets would be a good one, when you finish your project you could enjoy your subject at a reward hope this helps

Got a jar of coins? Perhaps just a pocketful of change?
Shoot them under differnt lighting conditions, alone or in a pile, stacked in columns or laying loose. Shoot macro close or encompass the whole "collection". Shoot some close in a hand, or as they go into a vending machine.
Just my two cents.

The 'shoes' caught my eye...How about a collelction of pictures of shoes that people have used as 'flower pots'--if pictures would work for the collection...?

find people that smoke, lokk at their ashtrays. They may have a lot or a few. Some may use beer bottles or toss them in the dirt. But all smokers "collect" their discarded butts somehow.

People collect all sorts of things. Magnets, thimbles, spoons, comics, coins, stamps, toe-nail clippings, recipes, beer bottles, shot glasses, porn, postcards, Barbie dolls, insects, pressed-flowers, bibles, Star Wars action figures, Elvis memorabilia...

place a semi translucent gel, piece of paper, thin white fabric or any other material that allows light and image to get Through the viewing lens of your camera. pay attention to the overall shape that you are seeing . choose whatever turns you on literally and shoot away.
just make sure to remove whatever material used, to preview the image that you thought turn you on!. the result might be pleasing or disappointing and yet it will tell a lot about yourself.

Think of objects people collect for example stamps, magnets, postcards, shot glasses, jewelry, dolls, wood carvings, comic books, or shoes.
You could also gather things that are someone's belongings- things that are sentimental and special to them.
