I have a friend...a former friend...who is in a relationship with an abusive guy. She has given up most of her friends because this guy has asked her to. He slaps her and treats her like dirt. Why does she put up with that? I would like to help her, but I can't do anything unless she wants help. Why would an intelligent, beautiful, sweet girl stay in a relationship with a total jerk? I'm just so frustrated and hurt because "she" doesn't feel she can even say hi to me if I see her in public. I'm really worried about her. Her bright wonderful future isn't looking so bright anymore. Plus I'm suprised her family doesn't say anything to her.

It's part of the cycle of abuse. Her self-esteem has taking a HUGE hit, and now she thinks that that is all she deserves and that if she leaves him, nobody else will love her.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about it. She'll only leave him when she is ready, and even if you force a break up, she might wind up dating another man who treats her the exact same way. It's a mental illness and all you can do is suggest she talks to someone at an abused women's shelter. I'm sure if you go there yourself, they'll be able to give you advice on how to convince her to find help.

Good luck!

A lot of times the women have such low self esteem, she probably thinks that he may be the only one that wants her.. and also some women don't want to be without someone to call their own no matter how abusive the relationship may be. The best thing I can suggest is to continue to be a friend and constantly talk to her and tell how beautiful she is and how much she deserve to be treated like the wonderful person she is. She'll get tired of it hopefully soon and decide that it's time to leave, but she is the one who has to make that decision

Because she has no self esteem. All you can do is be supportive, urge her to develop survival skills, such as job skills so she can support herself when she leaves, also try to save money, but don't let him know it. Her family probably thinks abuse is normal. Her dad probably abuses her mom, which is why she thinks that kind of thing is normal

Her family may feel the same way as you. Stay there for her as she soon may realize he is a jerk and need her friend.
