Letting him have the teething pacifier is just fine. If you would like to give him a change of pace, wrap a piece of ice in a wash rag and let him chew on it as you hold him. The cold will help ease the pain, and the wash rag will keep the ice cube from making his mouth too cold. As far as getting rid of it in the future, pay attention to his attitude towards it. if he seems disinterested in it, take it and put it up somewhere.

Place a teething ring ,not a pacifier,in the freezer let it stay till it freezes ( i had 3or 4 so i always had one available) and just before you give it to your baby run warm water for 5 or 6 seconds to remove frost if any. The ice cold ring will help sooth his gums. Studies say that if we as an adult had to go thru what a baby goes thru with the teething process we couldn't stand the pain without drugs. So remember your baby is hurting when he /she fusses. There is an old wives tale that if you take a silver thimble and gently press it on the babies gums it will help the teeth come thru the gums ..Don't try this ,its just something Ive heard.

How old is he?
anyway, don't worry too much. If it helps leave it. buy a couple and change and clean it in between. When teething is over or you see it doesn't bother him that much gradually take away the "dummy".
My son was also hooked on it. Eventually i took it away during the day - out of sight otherwise he wanted it again and gave it at sleep/nap time. Then eventually i took it away nap times and night time. Just keep it out of sight. Sometimes its more of a habit than anything else.

Wet a clean wash cloth and put it in the freezer to make it real cold. Let him chew on that. There is also a homeopathic medicine that the pharmacist sells. It is for teething. It worked great for my children.

You're almost over the hump. Leave it in for a while longer. when he gets his I teeth in you can ween him from it. Unfortunately he will not like it but that's parenting for ya. He'll get over it. A tip. Swipe it when he's asleep.
