Shepherds have sensitive stomachs. Solid Gold Wolf Cub is great, but that alone gives my 4 1/2 month old Shepherd loose stool. I mix 1 cup of Wolf Cub with 1/2 cup of Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy, and feed her 3 times a day. She has an amazing coat as a result. Nutro is available in just about any pet store, and Solid Gold can be ordered off the internet. Any thing raw or out of the market may cause stomach discomfort for your Shepherd, so be careful with it.

Whatever you feed, don't give your dog Purina Puppy Chow or Kibble & Bits as suggested. Or anything from your local supermarket or big chain stores like Walmart. They're pretty much junk food for dogs with ingredients you wouldn't even want to eat yourself. If you wouldn't eat it, why would you feed your dog, right. I would naturally hope that you want the best for your dog.

You can order hollistic dog food online if your town doesn't have a holistic (health) pet store. Brands such as Innova is pretty good for puppies. And they contain ingredients that are both good & healthy for its growing stages. The link below contains 5 healthy pet food brands.

The feeding depends on what your puppy weighs. Usually, there is a guide on the back of the bag that will recommend how much you need to feed him.

Good luck & have fun with your puppy.

Where do you live anyway? Do you have yogurt? Dog biscuits? Canned Hash?
Yogurt on the dog food. Toss it like a salad. Garnish with 2-3 crushed up biscuits. Need calcium.

How about some scrambled eggs? 1-2 eggs a day. Need protein.

one can or half a can of canned hash (corned beef) 2x a day.
Even cat food is good.

Look at the labels of all of your dog food before buying. If the first ingredient is corn, that is a filler, they eat more, they poop more, the poops are soft and hard to clean up.

I know a lot of gsd breeders use raw food. You may want to check the Yahoo groups for one that will explain that more. Basically, they feed raw meat, vegies, etc. I suppliment my dogs with raw food.

I also have a friend who has a gsd that uses blackwood. She swears by it but has to order it over the internet from their website. She does a lot of competitions with him. I have heard of many of the police dog handlers using Nutro which is another good food. I have shelties and use nutro.

Get Holistic puppy food, the other stuff is full of diseased animal parts, chemicals' & by products such as animal feet, feather's, hooves. A good brand is: Nature's Recipe, my dogs love it. It is easily digestible. It doesn't contain any beef, corn, wheat or preservatives. They like the venison meal & rice recipe. I don't get anything the vet recommends, as they are usually promoting chemical laden food. Follow package directions for your pup! Hope this helps!

The best food that you can feed a growing large breed pup such as yours is SCIENCE DIET PUPPY LARGE BREED. It is one of only a very few that is specifically formulated for the Large Breed pup. It wont cause him to grow "too fast" which can be dangerous to his health in the long run. I feed mine 5 cups of food per day w/ two treats thrown in for good behavior. SCIENCE DIET can be ordered on-line and deleivered to your door for about $1.00 / #
