Computers haven't reduced reading ability... email, site navigation, IM, blogging... all require the ability to read. The amount of non-reading communication gadgets we have (e.g. cell phones), video games, and TV have contributed to reduced print literacy.

Reading is a form of communication and entertainment. More and more time is being spent by kids doing non-print forms of communication and entertainment. This results is less practice, and therefore less skill.

I don't think that computers have reduced the power of reading, but the reading of books has declined with many people. Partly is probably because of the time spent on computers, but also due to the many other alternative activities available now.

The computer can be a great information source, but only if the enquirer has the ability to sort out the true from the false, which is definitely NOT easy.

As to reading for pleasure - it's tough to curl up with a nice PC and read a book there. It's available, but not nearly as cozy as reading a book.

Granted people do not read as many books as the old days. With computer technology you have to be able to read so I don't think the habit has come down. In fact I read more now than I did before I got a computer. The world has opened up to me.

Well, computers certainly have had no effect on the power of reading, although they may have had some effect on the prevalence of reading.
It is sad that some people read less; an ill informed populace is one ripe for takeover.
Yes, I remember the old days and books; they are my current days as well. Books are available as ebooks now which is far more convenient, though certainly not as "touchy feely."

People have stopped buying books because these days it is all "instant gratification" and people will not readd HG Wells or Shakespeare as the values in such literature has become outdated. These days it is instant fixes that people want. Hence the habit of reading books by turning the pages is gone.

well computers, along with video games, tv, movies, and many other things have brought down the number of people who read. many people still do read, but many dont. many children dont read as much as children use to because of all of the distractions. many people would rather watch tv than read a book. to answer your question. yes, computers have reduced the power of read BOOKS (when you are online you may read tons of stuff, example:emails, comments on myspace, yahoo! answers, lyrics to songs, forwards, etc.).

I don't believe computers have hurt reading ability. After all when you are surfing the net you are reading almost constantly (except for the porn surfers of course!).
