OK, so, I if I upgrade my Direct TV reciever to an HD reiever, and I use the HDMI cable to hook it up directly to my 50 inch plasma HDTV,

Does the picture quality on every channel become really good? or is it just the HD channels that will only catch the high quality picture?

I'm thinking of upgrading so I can use the HDMI cable, but I'm wondering if even MTV or ESPN channels will better picture quality as supposed to using a s-video cable with a regular reciever??

I work in an Electronics store where we sell DTV, TV's, etc. We have our demo sets connected to the HD receiver via HDMI cables and Component cables. Basically with the component cables you have 3 for video and 2 for audio. HDMI carries both on one cable. The HD channels are INTENSE using the HDMI cable but are just as good using the component cables. The standard definition channels are a bit better using the HDMI (I think) but if you stretch the picture to fill the screen to eliminate the lines on either side of the 4:3 picture, the picture itself is still distorted a bit since you are stretching it to fill the screen. Hope this helps.

You'll see a slight change on SD channels. On HD, it's fantastic since you get digital video and audio with the HDMI cable.

i think only the HD channels. but there will also be room for some improvement if you are using a HDTV.
