It would be good to have answers from all religions and please indicate which religion it is.

Even if your religion has no guidance on this, it would still be useful to know it.

While many modern-day geologists and secular humanists promote the belief that the earth is very old (billions of years) there are others who do not believe that and believe that the earth is much younger and created by intelligent design.

As a Christian fundamentalist, I believe the earth is less than 10,000 years old. A Christian liberal would likely go for the older "billions of years" model.

Why do those scientists who believe in intelligent design keep quiet? Just read this quote:

"To be a molecular biologist requires one to hold on to two insanities at all times. One, it would be insane to believe in evolution when you can see the truth for yourself. Two, it would be insane to say you don’t believe in evolution. All government work, research grants, papers, big college lectures - everything would stop. I’d be out of a job, or relegated to the outer fringes where I couldn’t earn a decent living."

I believe the universe is about 6005 years old.

There is no "scientific" evidence for the age of the earth. The 'scientific method' requires controlled experimention to test a hypothesis or theory to determine fact.
There is no reliable method to test the age of matter (organic or inorganic) for things more than about 4,200 years. The reason for this is the inability to calibrate such a test because there is no matter that is positively known to be older than that.
Since no testing method can be calibrated, they all operate in the realm of theory, relying on radiometric decay or some other gradual process.
The problem is, when testing a substance of known age, each and every dating method yeilds incorrect results. Why, then, would we trust them when measuring matter of unknown age?
Remaining objective is the most important criterion for a scientist. If a man claims to be a scientist, and believes he knows of a certainty how old the earth is, he is not a very good scientist.
"Beleiving" is a characteristic of religion, not of science.
I make no claim that the earth can be "proven" to be 6005 years old. Being a Christian, this is part of my belief system. As a scientist, I have never encountered evidence to the contrary.
Kent Hovind does an excellent presentation on evidences for a young earth. His web link appears in the "Know your source" field, and I'll include it hear for your convenience: http://www.drdino.com/downloads.php

I am an evangelical Christian. (I believe what the Bible says.) The Bible says that God created the world. It doesn't say how long ago. There may be Christians who like to conjecture, but that doesn't mean that they know. God didn't reveal how long ago he created the world. Think of Biblical truth as a pyramid of information... the most revealed truth is about God Himself; then how man relates to an infinite, personal God; next about human relationships; then comes subjects that help humans fare well...ie. finances, sex, parenting, health concerns, and a little even on government, etc. The least revealed truth in the Bible is about math and science. I have a hunch that this phenomenon is because God gave us the mind to explore, and to learn. It is a very satisfying thing to investigate and discover God's creation through math and science.

The bible does not say. Some people have tried to deduce the age using genealogies in the Bible. But I do not think that this would be accurate because of the way of recording genealogies at the time.
