before the person, the narrator had no knowledge of love. they loved without truly knowling what love is.
when they met the person, they truly experienced love.
when that person left, they were desolated and helpless, unable to love anyone else

It means that he loved life with gusto but not having found what he was seeking he is disappointed, and at this juncture in his life he is withdrawing rom outside world; his next quest will be looking deep within his soul for answers and there he will not be lonely anymore.
