It is a genetically transmitted illness in which the hemoglobin chains formed in red blood cells are abnormal. A child with two thalassemia genes( transmitted from both parents) will need blood transfusions about every month from the age of 6 to 12 months. The child will also need Desferal injections starting after a few months to prevent complications due to the storage of iron in different organs. Bone marrow transplant is curative.
