A Father and son story:

When I was 5, my father was the smartest man in the world.

When I was 10, dad knew some things but not everything.

When I was 20, I was amazed at how little the old man knew.

When I was 30, I began to ask Dad for some advice.

When I was 40, I wished Dad were still around. He was so wise and I have so many questions I'd love to ask him.

Think of males as lions. The head lion in the den, the Alpha, is the boss of his den. When the younger male lion reaches a certain age, he wants to challenge the Alpha for the "head lion" position. This sort of situation is common throughout the animal kingdom.
When a dad takes a firm stand against his son, the son will back off for a while, and assume his position as "prince", not "king". However, if dad takes a passive approach to his son, the son will take more and more liberty to become the King until he completely disregards dads authority.
Hope that makes sense to you :)

It's an instinct to develop a likeness to the power he sees in him: stubbornness, confidence, control, knowledge, etc.
There is also disagreement for the lack of experience and insight - except in the case that the father says one thing while speaking the contrary in his actions. Then the son has a cause (though no solution).
