I am not totally sure, but being a French teacher and recent graduate.... I can take a stab at it. First there are Cajuns and Creoles in LA. Recent estimates put the fluent population at about 150,000 at max. I think it is a bit less because many older speakers are starting to die. Next you have French Canadians/Quebecois/e to count. I would guess that there are about 300,000. There are a lot is FL and New England close to Quebec. Next there are French people of course. I'd guess that there are about 200,000 of those too. Next is Hatians and Africans along with Middle Eastern people. There are lots of these. I used to live near Detroit and I've found lots, but they usually speak Arabic too along with English. Maybe almost 500,000 in that group. So, I'd guess that along with teacher such as me there might be around 1,000,000 people who know French well, but are not nearly 100% or native speakers. Just an estimate.

According to the U.S. Census bureau, there were 1,643,838 French speakers living in the U.S. in 2000. After Spanish and Chinese, French is the third-most spoken foreign language in the United States. This compares to 1990, when French was the second-most spoken foreign language with 1.7 million speakers.

Are you from France? There's as many french speaking people in the US as there are english speaking people in France.
The only difference is that in the US at least they make an
effort to understand you. Which I found absent in France.

If you are coming here expecting to converse in French you will be disappointed. If you are outside of major cities/campuses you will have no luck whatsoever.

Very few people who are born in this country. That's probably one of the reasons that we're hated so much; we expect everyone and his brother, both here in the states and abroad, to adapt OUR language and yet very few of us are fluently bilingual compared to people in other countries.
