Yes ... Sex before marriage and outside marriage is a great sin in Islam ... I don't know about other religions...

And for committing it ... those who are not married are punished with 80 whips (man and woman) ... while those who are married are punished with death...

Why Death for the married ones ... because married man or woman who commits Adultery destroys the community...

By finding their pleasure somewhere else they don't give their Husband/wife their right of having sex with them... which may encourage them to fulfill their needs somewhere else too...

By having illegal children outside marriage ... causes psychological harm to their legal and illegal children...

By dishonoring the sacred bond of marriage...

By spreading of diseases ... they may catch a disease through one of these relationships ... and infect their husband/wife with it...

By threatening a stable marriage...

As for whipping the unmarried ... it's for they may have committed a mistake because they are not married yet ... but when they feel the pain of the whip they won't do it again ... not even after getting married...

It’s all about protecting the society … and keeping families healthy … to bring up healthy children (both physical and psychological) raised by good parents… to protect the future and the present …

Yes, I am sorry to say that it is considered a sin. Just remember...according to the Bible all sins are equal. If you are thinking about it or have already done it I'm sure there is a certain amount of guilt. I don't consider sex evil though. I'm not saying that just because you love someone and you have sex that it is okay to sin...but God loves you no matter what mistakes you make. Sex is your personal decision and I refuse to believe you will go to hell just because of that. Prime example, Mary Magdolen.

I guess it depends on your own religious beliefs whether or not it is a sin, but even if it is a sin according to your religion, what will happen to you? Will you turn into stone?
Now, if you do have sex prior to blessed nuptials, you could get pregnant and have to abort it, or raise it on your own, or get married too young and then everything you have hoped for in your life gets put on hold...or you could get a disease and die. Basically, sin or no sin, don't have sex before you are married unless you are ready to deal with any of those issues.
