I have felt this sharp pain in my left side before, but it had gone away within a matter of a day. This time it has been there for almost 4 days. I don't have health insurance, or else I would have gone to the doctor's already, but if the general concensus is that it is serious I'll go.

Could be an oncoming bladder infection.
Go,
but if you SERIOUSLY can't afford to go,
Drink concentrated cranberry juice frequently - RW Knudsen is a good brand. You can get it at a health store
Stop eating sugar.
Also, it might be a kidney stone. There are resources on the internet at google.com for dissolving these yourself. If they are relatively small, surgery may not be needed.
Good health!

Stones in bladder is the possibility.
Here is the ayurvedic suggestion for your health, if you can get it online.
Punarnava Guggulu 2 tabs and Goxuradi guggulu 2 tabs, tabs should be size 125 mg, to be slightly chewed and swallowed with water after breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take lemon water three times a day. 1 lemon juice, 200 ml (6 Oz) water and a little salt so that teeth do not become sour.
YOu may have to visit wash room every hour, till you take medicine. Take the medicines for 20 days or till stones come out of urine. You will feel them coming out
Many other natural remedies exist, but this is safer and easier, since medicines available online these days.

If the pain is in your back on the left side, it could be a kidney stone. Both my husband & I have had one .... mine came with absolutely no warning, but he had pain like that off and on before it finally became unbearable.
By the way, if it would happen to be a kidney stone, increase your intake of water. Seems to help my husband. And if it is a kidney stone, there really isn't anything a doctor can do anyway, except treat the pain & wait for it to pass. If it doesn't pass they have ways of breaking it up with laser etc.
Please keep in mind that I am not a medical professional

You may have a urinary tract infection that has affected your kidney on the left side. Or you have kidney stones. Does it burn when you pee? Do you pee often? Is it hard to go? Find a clinic where they'll work with your finances. We have La Fe Clinic where I used to go prior to starting to work at the hospital, when I didn't have insurance. Consultations were 5 dollars and meds were like 1 or 2 bucks or free depending.

You should have a dr. check it out. It could possibly be a sign of a UTI which is serious and could spread to the kidneys if not treated properly. Better to be safe than to be sorry

Try some AZO standard ... get it over the counter at a drug store, wal-mart, etc. It won't hurt to rule out the risk of urinary tract infection. Guzzle the cranberry juice also.
