I'm sure California has the most atheists as it's got the biggest population, and the Pacific Coast as a whole is popular for disbelievers, but the State of Washington actually has the highest percentage of people who claim to have 'no religion'. It's 20% or so, if I remember right.

I think they're right here in California. People from church talk about going to the "mission field" and I point them to this passage from the Bible.

Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

I'm not sure about the largest population of atheists - but I used to live in Portland, Oregon and I know it has the lowest church attendence in America. (Or at least it did a couple of years ago.) That's one good thing about that town.

There's quite a few of us in Washington State :)
Oregon has quite a few too.
To really answer your question though:
I doubt there's any one place Atheists choose to live. We're everywhere.
