Because I get the same rubbish about stuff in England when I travelled. Even had one taxi driver in Canada ask me if it was true that kangaroos are wild in England!
Some people are culturally and geographically ignorant.

By the way I went to Australia in 1997 and found it pleasant and appealing and I was not expecting to see kangaroos hopping along Sydney Harbour Bridge or dingos walking around shopping malls either. But then I took time to find out about the country and had good knowledge and looked forward very much to the trip (apart from the long plane ride) I was not disappointed!

Those questions are precious, I got a kick out of them. That's like asking an American to show you where the poor live you'd like to meet them.

Australia is a proud country. Though I must say not too too long ago there was a chap critizing America and how proud he was that there were no law in Australia based on the morals of religion and that her laws were based not on religious morals - my best guess would be atheist beliefs.

We only know what you tell us, and what common sense prepares us for. At least no common sense person I know would ask if you all live in gingerbread houses.

I would love to go to Sydney. From what I've seen on the net it looks like a very beautiful city.
Of course Australia is a modern first world country much like the U.S.
Do people really think you don't have electricity and paved roads?

When I travel, people ask me stupid questions about the US, too. That is just because people only hear certain things about a country and form a stereotype. If they are friendly, I don't mind at all.

I think Australia sounds lovely. It is one place I haven't been.

I'm sorry that after becoming a US Citizen you still call it home, however....

Still, I think the chances of us ever going to war with Australia are slim and none.

Ive been to Oz, and think Aussies are great people. Very modern cities, but there is definately a very large rural part of the country as well. Just bear in mind, there are always stereotypes of a place, and when people havent been there or met anyone from there, they are going to ask questions. They might seem silly to you, but not them. You probably have your own stereotypes about people from different places, like Russia or Argentina (for example), so if you met someone from there, you might ask them a question or two about their homeland that would seem quite silly to them as well, but people dont mean any harm by it.

It is like any large country. You will have your rural areas and your metropolitan. Can you believe that in the U.S. that there are dirt roads, and homes with out central heat or air? Every country has its stereotypes. Never been to Australia, but I have seen Mary Kate and Ashley's movie that takes place there. It gives a good view of Sydney.

I'm an Aussie and I travel a lot. The people who ask those questions often have not travelled.
Its fun to tell em - "Yeah, we got Koalas and Kangaroos in our back yard". Because at my parents house we really do!!!
We are from a very, very lucky country. As you travel you will see this also.
We are one of only a few nations, whos travellers actually look forward to going "Back home"

I haven't been to Australia but through my travels I have met alot of Australians. Also, I'm of Greek descent and I have many relatives in Melbourne.
From what I've gathered, Australians are very adventurous people
and love to travel. From the photos that my cousins have sent me it doesn't look primitive at all- lovely homes and scenery.
I hope to visit one day

That's funny. You can thank Hollywood for that. People in Texas are asked if they ride horses, wear boots and rustle cattle. Just shrug it off or better yet, play along, that's what I do!

I have never been to Australia, yet, but I assume it's not too different from here (US)...maybe a little hotter.
