I had a preacher tell me he believed many of the stories in the Bible actually showed that we were visited by Aliens - Yes, it could very well be that God was an alien. Considering that the meaning of "alien" seems to be "different than what we know" then yeah, God fits that category.

The mid-east god was based on the Anannaki, in that region mining gold (read the original garden of eden story on the Sumerian tablets).
Consider the fact we will eventually learn how to travel through time. It's very possible that version of god was a simple thief.
