In Australia there are strict guidelines to giving blood and one of them is whether you have lived in the UK for 6 months from 1980 to 1996. (your not allowed to donote blood if you did)

Anyone know why?

There were various outbreaks of Mad Cows Disease during that period and since its a blood borne disease in humans they ban you from donating blood to protect the recipients.

They had an outbreak of mad cow disaese in early 90's..Stays in your blood forever if you had contact..Could ruin the entire blood supply

just asked an Australian friend online and she said it's because of cause of Mad Cow Disease. It can live dorment in the blood/body.
