Lol, how true. Other animals do it too - horses i've had drop their feed and hay in there. I think they just get a bit thirsty while they are eating.
Cindy's idea of seperating the bowls is a good one.

Not sure, but best guess is that they have trouble seeing where the water surface is. Floating a piece of food lets them see how far it is to the water when they want to drink. There's nothing more embarassing than putting your face too far into the water!
I've also seen cats who will tap the water with a paw before they drink. It looks like they're making ripples for the same reason. Some cats leave toys floating in the water dish too.

I literally laughed out loud when I read your question. My cats' water bowl always has a piece of cat food in it when I change the water. I've tried moving the bowl, moving the food, changing kibble type, etc. Nothing worked, so I've just learned to live with it. Now I sort of use it as an indicator. When the piece of food has absorbed enough water to become a floatie, it's time to change the water.

I think my cats are picky. I've had some cats, past and present, who pick the food out of the food dish with their paw and drop it on the floor to eat it. Occasionally they miss and the piece of food goes in the water bowl. Once the food is soggy, they're all, "Ugh I don't want to eat THAT!" LOL

Ha,ha--I guess my cat is very fussy--she won't drink her water if one piece of cat food gets into it. She also won't eat a piece of cat food that she's dropped onto the floor herself.
With former cats I have seen that piece of cat food in the water - I often wondered if it was for flavoring, too. :D

If the piece of cat food didn't end up in the water bowl every time, you wouldn't have asked.

Our kittens do that too...we couldn't figure it out, and their foster mom from before we adopted them couldn't figure it out. Finally, one day I looked over and saw that they were drinking the water from around the food...and wouldn't drink the rest of it... So I am definitely for the idea that they are flavoring their water!! Hey...they have taste!! We have flavored waters...no reason they can't create their own!! LOL

Well when they eat there food some food stays in there mouth, just like humans they keep a little food in there mouth on accident. Then when they stick their tongue out to drink the food falls out and what's the point in getting it out. And they cant get it with there paw and they aren't gonna get it with their mouth it looks nasty I mean it's all soggy.

I think its kind of a game. My cat plays fetch with a little foam rubber soccer ball and she takes the ball and dunks it in the water before she brings it back!!
