I thought religion was supposed to bring people together, not divide them.

Gee I wonder? Suppose it has something to do with the idea that says I'm right and everyone else is wrong.

The premise of your question is wrong.

The Soviet Union was officially a non-religious country, yet it was constantly at war. It's underlying ideology was that Communism is the best form of government and therefore we must encourage the 'armed revolution' in all countries that are not Communist.

Switzerland is a religious country, yet it hasn't started a war for over 800 years.

Nazi Germany was not really religious either. Hitler and the higher officials kinda believed in a weird amalgam of ancient Norse and Christianity. The swastika is one of the Norse 'Runes'. The Nazi's were like the old farmer who said he wasn't greedy, he just wanted the land next to his. Hitler called it 'living room' [in German of course.] Thier religion was that nordic/german was the superior race, and all the rest of us were mud people who were only fit to be slaves or killed.

Islam has a command in the 'holy book' to convert the infidel, make them second class citizens paying a special tax [slaves] under Islam, or kill them.

Generally speaking Democracies do not start wars, although they frequently finish them.

Also generally, government systems that give all individuals a lot of rights, such as the right to own property, and the right to the fruits of your labor, do not start wars either. It's bad for business.

I've given 1 example of a non-religious country that was always at war - the USSR, and one religious country - Switzerland, that's not been in a war for over 800 years [altho they will defend themselves].

Christ said that his word would divide families.
Islam means submission [not peace] and divides the world into two parts ['us' and 'the others'] and you're encouraged to convert 'the other'. If 'the other' will not convert and will not 'submit' then you are allowed/required to kill them.

Some religions are tolerant of the beliefs of others. Many are not.
Even if we were to all convert to a single religion, Islam for example, there would still be wars. Read the history of the Islamic countries. There were always one dynasty or another killing each other for slight differences in interpretation of the religion. Still are, for that matter. Even in Iraq it's the Shia killing the Shites, killing the Baathists - and they're all supposed to be Islamic. And of course, they're all trying to kill the Coalition forces, which are mostly Christian.

If that is true, then why haven't there any news that state the Vatican is at war, or Mecca, Saudi Arabia is at war. Religion does not start war. It is the rivalry in politics, the selfsihness of a tribe or other possible matter that incite wars.Even if the world has no religion in it, there would still be wars. Religion is only blamed because religion is a great unifying force to motivate people to fight or defend their rights without pay or get any form of exchange. However, many evil minds uses the ignorance of the blind followers of a religion.

Wrong question and i dont agree..Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Philippines, Dubai, Thailand, India, Japan, and hundred more religious countries are not in war..

If your are talking of the war in Israel and Palestine..that i dont know..But the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is definitely not caused by religion but by some peoples hunger for power.

Definitely are countries are religious countries..it depends on how look at the religions and how you practice it..

A devout Catholic or Protestant in America would consider it a religious country but an atheist would consider it not...

surely USA is the least religious if u c it this way bcoz not even 5% of US citizens follow their books and prophet . but it is mostly in war bcoz they are misutilising gods blessings on them and they have to pay for it on judgement day
ya most islamic nations are very religious as most of the population there follows quran and prophet mohammad. but u will never find any islamic nation attacked a nonislamic country, always they r attacked first and they just defend themselves.
now dont say that 9/11 was done by islamic nation ,it was just some individuals.

Good question and good point. I think it boils down to human nature. Seems like everywhere you turn someone is trying to tell you how it is or push thier views on you. And the other guy always thinks he is right and won't back down. What these people don't realize is that, if there is a god, we all pray to the same one. Regardless of religion. A weak mind believes in fairy tales. A strong mind opens his/herself to the big picture.

Religion varies greatly from country to country. Chrisitan and Islam and Jewish nations at war - pretty much seems to make sense.

Wow!! nice legs. But I digress.

I think the underlying reason is that people of faith don't really believe their own faith and other people's faith makes them unsure - after all, as much as they try to keep their own faith, they might be wrong.

Or perhaps it's because people who believe myths about supernatural beings belong in the bottom half of the intelligence bell curve, and that's all they know how to do, fight, since they can't think.

Because of the fact that they have not separated their government decisions from religious beliefs. They think that their cause is their best cause, and that is what god wants. When you have 2 different beliefs occupying the same space, it causes problems.
