I had run out of ideas for questions to asked so I asked for suggestions. I promised to post the question for the best response and I picked this one because, come to think of it, just how and when did the peanut butter and jelly sandwich get created?

We can thank Dr. Ambrose W. Straub for his invention of Peanut Butter....

But we have our MILITARY soldiers of WWII to thank for the peanut butter and jelly sandwich! :)

The link below gives the history of that great American standard, the PB&J sandwich....interesting too! :)

But wait....there's yet another link to confirm this! I know everyone thinks Carver invented PB, but he didn't...but he DID promote the use of peanuts in a variety of ways!

Anyway....2 links.....not just one.

this is a very American subject. It seems that in other countries peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or even peanut butter isn't as popular. It is however probably the number one choice for a sandwich with American children as well as adults. I think that this shows that it is the work of a few people that can popularize a certain food and make it a part of a culture. As opposed to thinking that a certain food becomes an icon because of its own integrity.

A good example of this is vegemite in Australia. This goes over as well in the US as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches go in the land down under. One person in Australia did not know what I was talking about and refer to it as "peanut paste". I have noticed that Peanut butter and chocolate candy is not popular in other countries as well.

I think it would be fun to share the joy of peanut butter with other countries, and maybe the discussion of its history might be of help.

We can get into the origin of each of the elements but no one just sort of whimsical came up with the idea that we know of ...or jelly didn't accidentally fall on a piece of bread with peanut butter on it and someone tasted it and then a rich national treasure was born ....

A Brief History of PB and J sandwich

Food historians have seen nothing written about the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before 1940. What we do know is that GI's in WW 2 were given rations of both peanut butter and jelly. When they returned to the states after the war peanut butter sales and jelly sales both soared. It would seem most likely this would be the birth of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I'm pretty sure George Washington Carver just added jelly to peanut butter.
