Thailand is a fun place to visit. I was there for 15 months in the early 70's so I don't doubt things have changed quite a bit since then.
Generally speaking however, Thailand is a second / third world country and economy. So be prepared for that. But, you money will go a long further too.
In the southern part of the country, on the penninsula, there are many resorts in tropical settings. In the north is more rural country. The entire country is only at 10 to 20 degrees northern latitude so it is usually warm. Much of the country is affected by monsoon rainfalls so do you homework.
I liked Bangkok, the capital city. There is a canal system, much like Venice Italy, where you can see floating gardens, the Kings Palace etc. Do be aware of hustlers. They will want to charge you more than the expected going price for some services.
Have fun.

I lived in Thailand for two months a couple of summers ago. Thailand is great. You have to check out the floating market about a two hour drive from Bangkok and the Golden Palace within in Bangkok is a must. The U.S. dollar goes real far over in Thailand. If you are willing to eat from street vendors and hole in the wall restaurants you could eat there for under $5 a day. Take that Rachel Ray!

Hi, best is to read for yourself what part of Thailand is fun for you. There are many different activities in different provinces, so it is just not easy to answer you without knowing your preferences.
Many people know Thailand from the few places they visit, and again, you will get their personal views based on their taste. I will try to give you an objective view. You can go to www.tourismthailand.org to have a look at the provinces and see the ones that are more popular. On the whole, Thailand is a pretty safe place to be. Like those who advised you, only the southern areas, near the Malaysian border will be adviseable to skip. However there are more than enough places for you still.
So the basic thing is to know what you want to do.
If you like sightseeing and shopping, Bangkok gives you pretty good mix of both, more than other provinces. There are parks, temples, theme parks, monuments etc. It is the capital, so many of these are there to visit. Shopping, there are quite a few big shopping centres and malls and wholesale cenres around. Not to mention the largest weekend market in the region, which now has a couple more new market beside it. Floating markets are there to visit, too, to see how life was like long ago and kept to this day.
Have an idea of what you want and get the tour packages to have a look around and then pinpoint places you want to revisit.
If you like beach resorts, then Phuket is the perennial favourite. It is the only place to be included in the 10 top beach holiday in the world in Asia. So this will account for something. There are many beaches to stay there, islands around too. Have a ook at Phang-nga and Krabi too. These places are within reach from Phuket by boat. So you get plenty of choices there.
Oh, Koh Chang is in the eastern part of Thailand. It is quite off the tourist track, so if you like plenty of privacy, then you go there. It is not as bad as others put it. You get nice clear water and beach resorts with island trekking available. And the seafood is always good.
Just west of Bangkok is Kanchanaburi. A place with history as the Death Railway during World War 2 is there. The Bridge over River Kwai. There is a museum there and the old rail is still there. There are waterfalls around, trekking and spas there too. So place is good for a break.
If you like cooler clime, then Chiangmai in the cool north will be where you want to head. There are places to visit, and activities like elephant riding/trekking, bamboo rafting and eco-trek there. There are resorts in the valleys and hilltops. So you can have choices. And there are hilltribes to visit too.
Eco stay, consider Pai in Mae Hong Son or Umphang in Tak. These places are natural and great for nature trek. Look up, there are guides who can bring you on your choice of treks, even overnight if you are game. Or even for hill tribes visit. Plenty of waterfalls, especially in Umphang, so do take note if that is your interest.
In the northeast, the Khao Yai National Park is nice to visit. Natural reserve with wildlife watching, there are accommodation there too in the forest. There are quite a few vineyards in the vicinity. So if you like wine tasting, Pak Chong will be good to visit. :) Climate is quite cool there, that is why the grapes are plentiful.
The northernmost part of Thailand, the Golden Triangle is worth a visit to learn about the drug in the early days. There is a local hilltribe who is still permitted by law to grow and smoke the weed. But not for anyone else. This is because it is part of their traditional culture and the Govt does not want to change their way of life. There is a Hall of Opium Museum. Good to visit.
IIf you like ancient civilisation and old ruins, there are a few places in Thailand. The major ones are Sukhothai, Phimai in Nakorn ratchasima, Phanom Rung in Surin and Ban Chiang Ancient Civilisation in Udon Thani. Check them out if you want.
If you like some recommendations based on your preferences, you cam get in touch with me and I will see what I can do for you.
Enjoy your stay if you ever go there.

Places to avoid - Pattaya (sex tourism), Koh Chang (west of Bangkok), Hua Hin (boring, golfer country), the very south around Hat Yai (not too safe right now and very muslim), the North East (bandit country).
Places to go -
Islands in the south Phuket (touristy), Koh Phi Phi (beautiful until the tsunami but should be good again), Koh Samui, Koh Pha-Ngan (Haadrin for the parties, but don't stay for long, its not like it used to be), Koh Lanta (not as developed and very beautiful) Koh Tao for great diving or snorkelling. Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai - in the north of the country, beautiful cities and good trekking Ayuttaya, north of Bangkok, it is a great boat journey along the Chao Phraya River, the ancient capital so its temple country, but again beautiful.

Cookie - Yes, Thai people value fun, smiles and a sense of humor - basic rule is if you don't get into trouble back home, you won't here either - - don't use the new found freedom to act badly, even if others do, specifically in Pattaya - don't get drunk and stupid and you will have fun - - but to me, Pattaya is barely Thailand - more disneyland w/thai workers...
