continue to pay off what you owe. call them for a payment plan if you don't already have one. get a copy of your credit report - you are entitled to get a free copy of it every year, there are places online that will give it to you just do a search or contact the three companies experian, trw and equifax for their report on you and make any changes or corrections that may need to be made to EACH of their reports.

in the meantime continue to pay your other bills on time and don't sign up for any credit cards, loans, etc. because they all show up on your report and may affect the way they look at your credit.

it's a process, but worth it. good luck

That wasn't Uncle Sam taking interest. But the bank.

Pay off what you owe first. It will be much easier to re-establish credit once you are debt free.

If you can't pay off what you owe, why would a bank or department store be willing to lend you more money?

4000 in interest? You must have had a huge bill that went unpaid for a long time.

Pay it off. Get another credit card and charge small amounts. Pay just over the min payment every month. That'll build your credit back up.

i recommend paying double triple or more payments, obviously you have not been paying more than the minimum, cut the card up so you can no longer use it, and its not uncle sam wanting the 4000 its the bank and its greed.
